luca grew up without any brothers and sisters, and his friends soon sought greater things for themselves after, leaving him behind. he was also never particularly interested in the world that existed above the sea, but when they had all gone to pursue it, he became curious himself (albeit a little belatedly) and went to see things for himself. being extremely out of the loop at that time, luca didn't understand what was going on when his fins suddenly disappeared, replaced by an unfamiliar set of limbs, and he didn't know quite what to do with them. oh, but it was very interesting to him and he found it quite amusing to poke at-- since it was the most he knew how could think to do at the time. he learned a lot of things by himself while he was partly on land. later on, he decided that these excursions should be more frequent.

among other things he noticed were the washed up shells on the shore and dried coral. the fate of what they might have been attached to before saddened him, but he as a tribute to their existence, he would combine them and craft them into a simple, circular headpieces. with this new hobby of his, he would spend afternoons picking up shells and dried coral to string them together (his method while he didn't know what and how legs were supposed to be used, was to crawl around until he got what he wanted).

one afternoon, just a little while before sunset, he was engaging in his normal, everyday activities. except unlike the days that preceded that one in particular, someone with an identical set of limbs chanced upon him reaching out to a white shell. what was so strange about this someone was that they were doing something that luca couldn't quite grasp. but luca had heard of them. he had heard of people. but what he didn't know was that whatever they did then and there, he could do too.

"it's called walking. i'll teach you when i have the time. not right now though." the person had said, laughing. they were very kind to answer all his questions. luca liked them. and had wanted to do something for them. an idea struck him, when he saw the seashell crown idly lying on the sand by the person's feet.

he remembers telling them to wait right there, diving back into the water, and wrestling a clam for its pearl. but when he resurfaced, the person was gone and luca never saw them again.

to date, it has been the biggest event of his life. it's probably because he can be a little petty sometimes. he has a nearly unsatiable curiousity which can get him into the worst situations and he’ll drag some people into it without really meaning to. he will usually readily agree to any favors, even if there’s nothing in it for him.
