Maelie was raised in a small family. She had a brother named Christian, along with her mom Antoinette and father Henri. She lived in the more rural side of town, living mostly off the land and what it gave. As a child, Maelie loved to garden. She enjoyed spending her days in the soil and planting a rainbow of flowers. In fact, it literally was a rainbow. Since she had so much time on her hands, Maelie took extra time planting her flowers in order by colour. It was a beautiful sight, and people from all around town came to view her garden.
When Maelie was around the age of 9, her brother went missing. He left no trace of where he had gone, and nobody could find him. After a year of searching, her parents decided to give up. Maelie never saw her brother again. However, she continues to search for him, trying to find out if he is still alive.
Near her 16th birthday, Maelie's father passed away. He was a rancher, and had been out in the fields for too long. He had gotten a bad case of heatstroke, and died working. It was then just Maelie and her mother. Ever since, her mother has been very protective over Maelie. She is constantly worrying something will happen, and often times she won't let her daughter go to work, in fear she may be hurt in some way.
