dahlia was born in seapalum and her parents taught her to love the land from a young age. she grew up eating the freshest veggies, sweetest fruits and had the company of the most stress free animals. when she was four, she road a pony the first time, on her own. she'd constantly been on the back of horses since then. it made sense, and it felt right. she was pushed to the other animals, too, learned to shear her family's sheep and alpacas, learned to milk cows and lead all of the above to pasture. it was second nature and it was easy.
something about the horses... it was more than easy. it was simpler than breathing, as second nature as the beating of her heart.
for her sixteenth birthday, she got her first horse. he was an injured thing, and was really only given to her because dahlia's parents knew he would never sell. he was big and grey. she named hims amstel and poured hours into his care. every moment was spent trying to ease his pain. he towered over any other creature in their stable but his eyes were the softest. finally, he stood evenly. he carried his weight and looked at dahlia brighter.
after that it was hard for anyone to ever find her.
dahlia had always been very aloof, and as an only child she was equally independent. enabled by amstel, it was hard to pinpoint her. she road through winding roads, galloped by fabled spots. she fought bitterly with her parents over what she could and could not do. for two years her family like was tumultuous, and once she turned eighteen she bridled against her parents and ached to leave. but she loved seapalum, and amstel too intensely to ever leave.
fate dropped her a kind card when her aunt became ill. dahlia's mother wanted to live with her lonely sister in the city. her father had been the one to move the delicate girl to the country when he first won her over. her mother and father left for family and left dahlia to fend for her own (she quickly picked up a job at the livestock store, being as experienced as she was).
she had never been happier, although she wasn't always the most reliable clerk.
