Jem comes from a very small family, never knowing any close relatives apart from his mother and father. His parents were both magical and highschool sweethearts, marrying very young, and producing Jem not long after their marriage. Despite how hard his father worked to support them, they never had much money to spend on luxuries. But they were pretty happy, all things considered.
His Mother got sick with a particularly serious illness, and they couldn’t afford the medicine to treat her; and the family didn’t specialize in healing magic, so that was out of the question as well. Jem wasn’t really aware of how serious it was. His father never took the time to explain to his son why Jem’s Mother was constantly bedridden. He was too busy taking care of her while trying to keep them afloat. The reality of the situation only really settled in when his Mother passed away suddenly.
Since then Jem had hardened into almost a different person. He grew up too fast and took on jobs as early as he could, all the while passive-aggressively blaming his Father for not telling him how sick his Mother had really been. They bickered like this for a few years after his Mother’s passing, until his Father decided they needed a change of scenery. They sold the house and managed to move to Sepalum Peninsula. When Jem’s not working odd jobs, he’s running around town doing who knows what.

- his parents reason for naming him Jem was very cheesy, embarrassingly so. they considered him a “gem” to their lives, and changed the g to a j. he’s very hesitant about telling the story, and will more or less tell a whole different story if someone is that curious.
- he’s got some burn scars on his back from his teenage years. some rowdy kids around his old neighborhood were playing with fire, and sadly Jem got caught in their antics when passing by. he had to go to the hospital to get them treated. they haven’t really faded all that much in the years that he’s had them, and for some stubborn reason, refuses to use magic to make them go away.
