history
Felix was born into what might have been considered a family ranked as upper middle-cass. His father was a traveling merchant and his mother made a small living out of baking. From his travels, his father would bring him home books as gifts and Felix would eagerly pour hours and hours of his time into them. As a result, he isn't very physically skilled. On his thirteenth birthday, his father returned home from his very last expedition after contracting a disease on his travels. Thinking it was just the common cold, Felix' mother took care of her husband and ended up with the illness as well. It was later on that they called for medical help, but at the time, nobody really knew what it was and several doctors came, fully protected for good measure, just to milk the unsuspecting family of their funds, resigned to the fact that they would quickly pass on and that the son would soon catch it too, as he was a frail young boy who rarely ever went out. Felix never caught the disease, but his parents died eventually in a less than restful sleep.
This gave him the extra leverage to delve into more books and to find work at such a tender age so that he could continue to purchase them. In the end he was able to pinpoint the disease, tracing it back to a remote island where small insects bit into the skin with poison. The effects were both fatal and contagious. What he'd never come to understand was how he stayed healthy throughout this trying time for his family.
It was an accidental secret, so to speak --and it was something his mother never disclosed to her husband (much less her child) as she never really thought of using her magic again. Not that it was particularly of bad intent that she kept it from them, just that she wasn't very good at it in the first place, so she never thought to integrate it properly into her life. The only time she'd ever used it after her marriage to Felix' father was the moment she realized she had caught her husband's disease.
