STARS AND BANNERS ~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~ ooc: look, sai's actually being productive It was late, gaining on midnight at least. The outside air was dark, the silhouettes of thousands of tree branches were barely visible against the moon and stars.
Maxine couldn't help the yawn, as she pulled her dress over her legs, hugging them close to her body as she curled up on her small isle seat. It had been a long day, a desperate day since 'school' was slowly creeping to view and wizard hunting was soon to be cut short.
The witch had to admit, she had never been to school, 300 years ago it wasn't exactly a standard to have every minor attend. Her sister miraculously managed to teach the thing her numbers, letters and spells (far from proficiently but what Maxine needed to know, she managed to learn). But technical history? post-arithmetics? science? All foreign to the girl.
The dim, old, yellow-stained lights flickered a little, as the train rolled on. Still a good half, maybe even hour out of the peninsula. It was a small ride of course, not many people tried to commute this late at night and there were only two more stops before Sepalum. The train was old, benches warn, carpet stained, lights waving back and forward like pendulums as the ride bounced about. It smelled of cigarettes, familiar, even comforting to the witch.
Then, the train went dark and hissed to a stop, a short stop, little uncomfortable but not too jarring. A few people yelped in shock of the sudden blackout. Maxine quickly pulled her legs out from behind her dress, quickly and quietly reciting a few lines.
Her pupils and auburn irises expanded, quickly taking on a feral look and covering the whites of her eyes so to take on the abilities of a cat, or some other night-time creature. It was a simple trick, one of the few she could do in her current magical state.
"Excuse me!" The girl pulled her head into the isle so she could see a young stewardess calling out to the now rustling, muttering train car. "Unfortunately, we seem to be having some technical difficulties, but rest assured the engineers are quickly working towards fixing them."
Well that was helpful. Maxine pouted a little, before noticing something catch her eye, something shining on the ground next to the seat across from her. Was that...
She looked left and right, checking to see if anyone was looking before slowly and quietly leaning and reaching over to try to grab the little treasure.

♕ WE'RE TAKING CONTROL we get what we want, we do what you don't, dirt and glitter cover the floor, we're pretty and sick, we're young and we're bored
Slipping pass a small group of people, was a relatively youthful man. Blonde hair hidden underneath a cap that came with the engineer uniform he was adorning, the lad gave the pipe wrench in his possession a quick twirl. A small gust of air in the form of a whistle left through his teeth as he propped himself down, "Don't touch anything," he said, blinking to the young engineer apprentice stationed near him, "Remember what happened the last time you did?"
With a toothy grin in contrast to the other male's look of confusion, the blonde gave a tap on the small door that led to some sort of chamber, "Know what to do with this?" he asked, and the boy's uncertainty grew. He was about to open his mouth when Nathaniel let out a laugh, "You open it, of course! C'mon, it's not that hard. We totally learned this back in school!"
"We-?" the brown-haired boy pointed to himself, then that same finger gestured back to Nathaniel as though to indicate some sort of connection between the two of them.
Nathaniel's brows furrowed, a pout on his face as he moved the pipe wrench to the knob of the chamber, "Did you actually forget about me? Seriously? Tragic! Absolutely tragic!" his tongue made a series of 'tsk's while the wrench worked to twist open the tiny compartment.
The sound of gas leakage was heard, and soon enough, the (real) apprentice was sent backwards when the air pressure inside the compartment flung its door open. The boy let out a yelp, and Nathaniel blinked a few times around them where the two other engineers looked to his direction in alarm. Although they obviously couldn't see too much, what with all the smoke the chamber had released.
The blonde snickered to himself, "Whoops," he pushed himself up to his feet, tilting the brim of his hat. His entire body glowed momentarily, and soon, he was no longer wearing the uniform of an engineer; instead, he now adorned what resembled the uniform of a train conductor. He glanced back to his (former) 'fellow apprentice' with obvious amusement, "Look what you did, Jimmy. A hundred years in the dragon's dungeon and we'll see if you're gonna learn something from that, huh," he grinned, taking steps backward as more of the same gas and smoke continued to leak. "But I gotta make my sparkle, sparkle, smoke bomb escape now, so, good luck with your lifetime lesson without me!"
Still grinning as the now panicking engineers attempted to do something about the smoke, the blonde tapped at the door behind him. The lock ticked, and he quietly slipped through the door. After a few steps through the link between the carts, he returned to the first of the carts available to the public.
The door slipped open, and Nathaniel walked further into the cart and smiled at the crowd, "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," he began, gaze scanning the group of passengers, "I realize that everyone is hoping to return home as soon as possible, and I do apologize on behalf of the staff for all the inconvenience caused. But if all of you could return to your seats, I'd like to take this time to check your tickets; it is during unsettling moments like these where thieves and robbers tend to run rampant, and it's important for us to catch those trespassers to ensure the safety of you and your belongings."
His expression almost appeared innocent upon seeing a few people taking suspicious glances to those in neighbouring aisles, "So, please ready those tickets and passes as I come by your seats," said Nathaniel, gaze flicking around once more, but only to notice a light-haired girl who seemed to be checking for something before she bent forward. Sky blue eyes slid. Though he couldn't actually see what she was reaching for, Nathaniel's smile widened as he turned to nod at the passengers around him, who were showing their proofs of access admission, "Thank you~ thank you~ and thank you," he sang, without actually bothering to check the passes.
After all, he wasn't even the real conductor.
He approached the young girl from behind, and tapped a finger on the top of her seat, "Hey lassie, an explanation of what you're doing, please," the blonde beamed as he took one step forward, leaned down, and reached for her extending hand, "Desperate enough to need a coin that someone else dropped? Poor dear," he looked to her with a blink, "But, does your train ticket exist at all, if we're going by this logic?"

STARS AND BANNERS ~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~★~ A young man’s voice rang out through the crowd, “Good evening,” Maxine chose to ignore it, just the usual damage control, apology, whatever. Not worth her time. Her teeth scraped across the lower of her lip as she continued to reach for the little treasure. It was dark, she was in like…the middle of the cart or something, she had time. ”Thank you, thank you.” he started to say, a bit too quickly for her comfort.
Shit, that made things harder…but treasure…
The girl bit her lip, pondering how far she was willing to go as she further stretched to reach the coin, by this point, the majority of her body-weight was off the seat, hovering over the floor as her stubby little limbs tried to reach whatever it was on floor across from her. She barely heard the tap on the head of the seat, oh so far away. ”Hey lassie, an explanation of what you're doing, please,"
WOAH THERE, that was way too quick for a decent check at the tickets! The girl, both way too focused on the prize and startled at the man’s expediency, tumbled to the floor with a slight yelp. “Desperate enough to need a coin that someone else dropped? Poor dear," Quickly, the girl turned to look at the conductor, whom held his hand out, patiently, obnoxiously. "But, does your train ticket exist at all, if we're going by this logic?"
Her eyes, still wide like a cat’s, narrowed as she glowered up at the man. God, he just exuded ‘pain in the ass’, didn’t he? Of course he was right. When you were below the legal working age and on your own, funds were tight. Anything that didn’t have to be paid, wasn’t paid. And with the train’s usually lax security, tickets were most often on the list.
Of course, she could hardly admit that. The girl grabbed the coin, in a flash now that she was on the ground. Her thieving skills, after all, had only gotten better with time. Nobody’s hands, she could easily boast, were as quick as hers. ”wow, you got through those seats awful fast, mister conductor!” She said, her voice mimicking the accent of a true child. She stuffed her hands in her pockets, as if looking for the non-existent slip of paper. ”It should be…It should be…Where, where is it?” Quickly her voice turned to that of ‘panic’ as she looked around, her eyes flickered back to that of a humans, just in case. ”I knows I had it!” She said. “Mister Ticket checker asked for it when he usually asksed! When we boarded the train!”
She in her feigned frantic, she delicately slipped the information in. She was a clever girl. This was an unusual time for a ‘conductor’ to do this job. And if this young man was going to put her in hot water, well, she’d have to heat up his own pot!
