It was around mid-noon now, the sun was still bearing down on the peninsula and it's inhabitants, but strangely the families that Nea had been used to seeing, were not present. She assumed most had probably opted too stay home on this particular day, perhaps taking a break from all that swimming. It had been unusually quiet around the beach, and she didn't really feel like sun-tanning again on the shore, so for today she had stayed under the surface of the ocean, close enough to the shore that should she need to retreat, her bum tail won't give much protest.
She laid on the sand on her belly at the ocean bed, using her arms as make shift pillows. Today, she had been dressed in a simple white summer dress, by the woman known as Adina. Something about it much easier to move around in, and it had proven true. Looking around her, she saw nothing that piqued her interest. Just rocks, shells, and those tiny little hermit crabs that kept crawling over her tail.
As she was flicking said hermit crabs from her person, she saw movement in the corner of her eye, looking over she was surprised to see the end of a fishy tail...a mermaid tail! And coming closer it seemed. 'Another one? Wait...I'm at the beach, of course they would frequent here.' Nea almost felt like smacking herself for being so surprised at seeing another one of her kind. Still, she wanted to be cautious, the last one she'd encountered had not been very pleasant, although she did enjoy a few moments with that particular merman.
Snapping from her thoughts she looked around again, again seeing nothing, or at least anything that would help her conceal herself from this new stranger. Thinking of the only thing that would remotely conceal her, she started to push sand on herself. After a few moments, she was relatively covered, though a few tendrils of her hair, her eyes, and a few patches of her tail still showed. No matter, even if this new merperson spotted her, it would give her enough time to pounce on them.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=style, vertical-align: top;] | | Squinting his eyes, Skylar gently brushed the remaining flakes of sand off of the gold coin he had uncovered. The sunlight pierced through the water just well enough to aid him in his search of trinkets to sell to the humans above the water. He held the coin piece in his hand, spinning it through his fingers one by one before opening a pocket in his messenger bag and dropping the coin into it. The bag hung on his shoulder just tightly enough that it did not hinder his ability to swim, although the constant friction from the strap against his bare chest was becoming more than irritable the past few days.
He continued on through the water, flicking his tail to propel himself wildly. He was doing it more out of boredom than show, since swimming in open waters didn’t require any kind of motor skill. There were no rocks that one could run into, so it was safe to just flail to his heart’s content.
Skylar’s mind was elsewhere, taking inventory count of his haul for the day. He had been out in the water actively searching for only a couple of hours, but he had managed to find some nice pieces of dead coral as well as some interesting looking seashells that were relatively intact. It wouldn’t be too difficult for him to string a few together to make a necklace or bracelet to sell in his little stand by the shore. Jewlery making wasn’t his strongest trait, but anyone could find seashells on the beach. The trick was to make them more appealing or there was no way he could make a living. Eating fish was enough to get him by, but after a while his mouth longed for a more foreign taste.
Preoccupied with his thoughts about where the next searching location should be, Skylar swam right above Nea without a second thought. He hadn’t even looked down to see if the area beneath him was clear of any obstacles, and it was safe to assume that if he had given the sand a second look, Skylar would have noticed the mermaid as her attempt to hide herself in the sand was a little less than adequate.

She thought as she quietly snickered to herself, her shoulders slightly shaking in her mirth, as she watched her unsuspecting victim swim over her. However, due to her glee, the sand that was over top of her head sprinkled down her face and onto her tiny nose. Twitching in irritation, Nea wiggled her nose to get the sand away, but all it did was irritate it further and then...
"Achuu!" ...she sneezed. The sand that covered her dispersed into a cloud around her causing her to sneeze vehemently.
"Achuu! Achuu! Achuu!" Her sneezes sounding similar to that of a squeaky toy, and if there were dogs around, they'd have probably flocked to her already. Uncaring whether her prey had noticed her by now or not, she tried to swim away from the cloud of sand surrounding her. However, because of her injured tail, she couldn't quite get the right momentum to swim away, and instead simply flicked more sand into the already cloudy waters.
"Ehhhhhh!" She whined, as she continued to sneeze, she covered her eyes with her hands, trying to prevent sand from getting into them, and forced her body to swim in one direction as straight as possible, but in doing so, she had bumped into something quite solid.
"Upu!" She grunted as she face made contact with this oddly squishy yet solid object, when she opened her eyes to see what she had bumped into, she was slightly startled to be facing the boy she'd been meaning to surprise. Mewling in surprise, she tried to swim away, but her traitorous body decided this would be a good time to give her, her daily dose of painful spasms. All movements ceased, and she froze like a statue as her body slightly convulsed from the pain coursing from her fin, to her tail, then to her lower back. Slowly, she sunk back to the ocean bed, whimpering quietly as she was curled into a ball trying to suppress the pain.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=style, vertical-align: top;] | | As soon as the first “Achoo” reached Skylar’s ears he shot backwards faster than the sand could rise up from the sea bed. His reflexes were amazing, but they were nothing to be proud of since they had become so refined because of his fear of pretty much everything. Although he didn’t remember, Skylar’s mother would always tell him stories about his adventures with the fish. Even if the fish were smaller than his thumb, Skylar would flinch whenever they approached him. They were harmless and he was giant compared to them, yet he felt the need to brace for harm whenever one got too close.
However, once Skylar realized that the noises coming from the giant sand cloud were just sneezes he grew concerned for the girl (or so he guessed) that was currently trapped. Sand wasn’t normally difficult to swim out of, even for a human. It stung the eyes a bit but with a few kicks or flips of the tail the person should have been able to escape unharmed. His confusion grew into concern as he tentatively swam towards the squeaky sneezes. Skylar wasn’t sure what he could really do to help, but it would have been rude to just swim away. Surely whoever it was wasn’t a threat. Threats didn’t get stuck in sand.
The sudden force that hit him in the stomach less than expected. He didn’t utter a sound (how could he?) but his mouth certainly opened widely in surprise. The wind was knocked out of him for only a second before he reclaimed his breath. It was only a mermaid, nothing more. He let down his guard after this realization...which was a big mistake.
Skylar watched in horror as he witnessed the mermaid fall to the ocean floor like a statue, whimpering so softly he could barely hear her. What do I do...?! The panic was setting in as he rushed to the mermaid’s side. Surely the bump couldn’t have been too hard? Skylar was far from the most solid person someone could run into; he was all flesh and bones and nothing more. Did he really hurt her that badly? She looked as if she was in so much pain. What do I do. What do I do? | [atrb=style, vertical-align: top;][atrb=style, background: #dcdcdc;] | [cs=2] |

[cs=2][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=style, width:400px; border-bottom:solid 10px #66aadd; ,bTable][atrb=style,background-color:FCFCFC;] The pain started to ebb, and soon it faded to a more tolerable hum. Nea's muscles relaxed ever so slightly, and her expression of pain was replaced with slight relief. However, she still felt a little sore, it was mostly her fin and lower back though. Not moving from her curled ball position, she looked to the boy she had bumped into. He looked frightened from her view, and she wondered what he could be so scared about, but then his gaze fell on her and she could feel her blood run cold. 'He's scared....of me? Oh no...I didn't...did I?'
She tried to remember if she had unknowingly snapped at the boy while she'd been having her 'attack'. Had she scratched him? Bit him? Growled or hissed at him? She shook her head, trying to clear the fog that the pain had left behind, but despite that she could not recall such an events taking place. 'Then does he know....what I am?' Looking to the boy, she let out a small whimpering mewl, trying to let him know that she was harmless...well for now. Her attacks always left her weak for a few minutes, and at least as far as she knew, she was in her rational set of mind.
She didn't know what else she could do to seem less...odd, she supposed. She was quite unused to the feeling of being so...out of place; of feeling like an outcast. This boy was the second of her kind that she'd met, and even though they were the same...they were completely different as well. 'It wasn't like this at home...' She had to constantly remind herself that this place was not her home, it never could be. The humans that lived here, even the ones of her kind that resided here, however temporarily, could never understand her, could never- would never accept her. Everything she was, and everything she did would be deemed 'unnatural'.
She sighed then looked to the boy again, and thought that even though there was a high chance of this back firing on her somehow, she still wanted to try. She didn't want to be lonely for the majority of her stay here, she at least wanted to have one friend.
"You..." She paused...trying to search for the right word to convey what she wanted to ask. Her voice was little raspy, and soft, barely above a whisper from lack of use. "You...okay? You...are not...hurt?"

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=style, vertical-align: top;] | | Why was she asking him if he was alright? He wasn’t the one who was on the ocean floor having a full out seizure, or did she not notice the fact that for the past minute she was wriggling and whimpering in pain. His expression changed from fear to absolute confusion. The poor girl actually looked like she was sorry, but Skylar couldn’t figure out for the life of him why. When she spoke, it only added to Skylar’s worry. Her voice sounded like an old recording that was worn down by time and lack of use.
At the same time as this whole ordeal was going on, Skylar couldn’t help but feel a bit relieved at the same time. Not only was the “impending threat” not an actual threat, she happened to be another merperson. Ever since he made the journey out here, Skylar hadn’t run into another one on the entire island. He saw plenty of people and magic users, but swimming around the beach, he never saw a life form more advanced than a fish.
At least now he knew he wasn’t alone.
Realizing that the mermaid had actually asked Skylar a question instead of just speaking words at random, he quickly panicked as he thought of what to say. Shaking his head fiercely and holding his hands up at his face he tried to show the mermaid that he was perfectly in tact. He hovered there in the water, tail flicking every now and then to keep himself afloat.
It was at that moment that Skylar noticed the mermaid’s tail. It was different than his, but in color and condition. The poor thing, it looked as if someone just took a knife and hacked at her scales. The more he thought about it, the more he realized that the injured tail probably played an important part in the events that had just occurred. It looked as if it would be hard to do any kind of advanced maneuvering which would explain why she had so much trouble getting out of the nasty sand cloud.
He swam closer to it, touching her tail gently with his soft fingers before looking Nea straight in the eyes with the most sincere concern he was able to give. Had he done this to her? No, all she did was bump into him. The injuries looked old too, as if they had been scarred over. If he had hurt her, the damage would have been fresher. But she looked as if she really was in pain and surely the bump must have caused that? Oh, the first merperson he had run into, and he was already off to a bad start!
Taking his fingers off her tail, Skylar swam back into a position where he was floating straight in the water. Without removing his gaze from the mermaid, he placed one arm in front of his torso and the other behind it, bowing for a few seconds before returning to his upright position. Whatever he had done, hopefully that apology was enough to fix it. | [atrb=style, vertical-align: top;][atrb=style, background: #dcdcdc;] | [cs=2] |

Her people only ever spoke when addressing those of higher social standing...or humans.
At first it had been fear, then confusion, and from the tenseness slightly leaving his body, she assumed he seemed a little relieved. When e started to wave his hands about his face she concluded that he was trying to say he was fine, which brought relief to her slightly frazzled mind. At least now she could relax a little, or at least she thought she could until he gently touched her tail. If she wasn't so weak and sensitive at the moment, she might not have felt it.
Looking to the boy again she saw his concern through his eyes and now she was the one replying with confusion in her own. What could this boy possibly be concerned about? 'No wait...that's a stupid question.' of course he would be concerned, she practically had a fit right in front of him. Trying to sit up, she tried to smile to show that she was fine, but it came out as a wince instead as some remnants of the pain still remained on her lower back.
She looked back up at the boy again when she felt his touch leave her tail, curiously she watched him as he swam a few feet away and bowed, like one of those uppity nobles. 'Huh. He is one of them.' Scoffing, she pouted and floated over to the boy. Close enough to be in arms reach of each other. Reaching out slowly, not wanting to alarm him all of a sudden, she cupped his cheeks in her palms, and with her thumbs pressed at the corner of his lips and tried to lift them up, in a sort of mock smile. She smiled as well, finding the situation quite amusing.
"You...are silly." tilting her head to the side a little, her voice losing it's raspiness little by little as she spoke more, she continued and said. "No sad...faces...allowed." her lips moved exaggeratedly to pronounce each word, it had been a while since she had communicated with words, and saying them felt foreign to her. She'd have to practice more if she didn't want to sound like a lagging record.
