[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=valign,top][atrb=style,width: 350px; padding: 15px; background-color: fbfbfb;] He had gone this way once or twice; the area around Tulipa Lake was neither his favorite or his least favorite... The way teenagers flocked there kind of unsettled Hermes' stomach. He didn't particularly care for watching young'ins shmooze on each other, so Hermes favored walks through the forest. The only thing that stirred there were the animals that called it home. It was always quiet save for the wind and his footsteps.
But last time Hermes had been here he witnessed something. It started off as a sound, then he saw it: something in the water? No, someone, and she was beautiful - long hair, compelling eyes. What was she doing submerged in the water like that, though? Before he knew it, she splashed him, and Hermes's eyes widened in surprise.
That wasn't just a woman in the water. It was a mermaid.
Of course Hermes had heard of merpeople. He just had never actually seen one. There she was though, fully tangible and he had a wet pant leg to prove it.
Hermes had called out to her then, something like "hey," or "what was that for?" but the memory of the conversation was so underwhelming in comparison to just the sight of her. A mermaid.
And now, with that experience in mind, Hermes was delving past the Tulipa Lake, watching its shores as he walked, searching for her. Really, what were the chances of seeing her twice, especially in the same spot? They could go on land, right? Maybe she was in a completely different area today. Hermes walked and walked, keeping his eyes peeled until he stumbled into the area people called the Sprite's Hollow. Had he gone too far? Surely if this woman was still here, he would have seen her by now, right?
Hermes sighed and rested his back against the thick trunk of a tree. He crossed his arms over his chest, wondering why he even bothered in the first place. | [atrb=valign, top][atrb=style, width: 120px; padding: 15px; background-color: 312925;] 332 WORDS |

Well, more so the water around the peninsula, not the peninsula itself, because she knew she couldn't even go on land for more than a limited time. She had experienced that already, and painfully so.
Still, though, it was pretty amazing that she could even walk at all. The transformation from scaley tail to smooth legs wasn't comfortable at all, which was probably why she hadn't been told about it before. It was a wonder she even knew how to in the first place, but it was probably just one of those things her kind knew. Maybe.
Heck, she didn't even know a lot of people like her. Merpeople. Not that she hadn't seen a few around, but either they were solitary creatures like herself, or they ventured on land far more than she could ever imagine.
Perhaps if she practiced walking, she could extend the period she was able to stay on two feet? But right now, with the painful fall from the last time she tried walking, as well as without any support system, it was impossible.
That's why she just kept roaming around this particular place. Near the lake, she knew, which she had seen on her last trip. And near the edge of the forest past the lake. She could see animals playing from the shore, and it was entertainment enough for her. At least until she could find someone to socialize with.
There had been a man on the shore further down a couple of days ago. A very peculiar man, with very long blonde hair and jewellery. She had never seen a male like that, human or mer. At first she had just observed him, watching as he walked as a sort of research.
Then she had noticed how beautiful he was. Not like any other humans she had seen since her first encounter with that man in the woods, as most males had very masculine features. Merpeople looked exactly the same, only without the legs, so she knew about appearances.
However, this man had a rather feminine look to him. If it was because of the hair, she wasn't sure. Or maybe the jewellery. But he was quite slender as well. When she had laid her eyes on this human, this very unique human, she felt herself fascinated, almost hypnotized.
But that all changed when he had noticed her. Out of panic she had moved her tail above the water and splashed water on him. Immediately after the mermaid had fled from the area, almost not catching the few words he had called after her.
Because he had called out to her after she had drenched him, however, Viola was intrigued. A human who talked!
The last human she had interacted with hadn't talked at all to her, which made her very confused. At first she wasn't even sure if humans communicated that way, but this human had definitely used his voice.
That was why she was back at the scene of the crime. Well, not exactly at the same spot, because she was a cautionary creature when it came to things like this. But if he could talk, she would talk with him. That was if he was even there. Who knew whether he would be or not?
When she arrived near the shore she was bewildered, though. The man was resting at the base of a nearby tree, his arms crossed over his chest. She had only stuck her head above the water enough for her to see, but as soon as she noticed he was there she swam to hide behind a rock.
Why she had done sone she wasn't even sure of, and as soon as she had realised her dumb action she pushed herself away from the stone and approached the shore. Slowly, however, without uttering anything. Who knew if this human would be more violent or savage than the other human she had met.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=valign,top][atrb=style,width: 350px; padding: 15px; background-color: fbfbfb;] Even through the large trees obscuring the sky, Hermes could tell that it was approaching the late afternoon and he hadn't eaten since this morning. Maybe he should just give up now. Even if the mermaid was here, who was to say she would make herself visible? Just because he was curious of her didn't necessarily make the opposite true. Considering how quickly she had fled upon their first (and only) meeting, maybe merpeople disliked or even feared humans.
Hermes didn't think he was very scary, though. Sure, he was rather tall, but he was essentially a stick. It wasn't like he planned on harpooning her or something... although there was no way for her to know his intentions.
Just as he considered giving up on this venture and turning back, he heard the sound of water shifting nearby. Hermes immediately perked up, his head snapping in the direction of the sound. He saw the shore lapping at the edge and the mass of rocks, but certainly no mermaid.
Really? Was he now imagining things just because he wanted them to be there?
"You're losin' it, man," he laughed to himself mockingly. "Too much sun."
But wait, no -- he heard it again. That was definitely the sound of water shifting. Hermes's eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he stepped away from the tree. "Hello?" he called out, tipping his head to one side.
That's when he saw her, as if she had come out of nowhere. It was definitely the same woman, too. He would remember a pretty face like that.
"Hey!" Hermes called out confidently, cracking a smile. What now? Maybe he should show her that he's not here for nefarious purposes? "Uh, do you remember me? I saw you here not too long ago." For whatever reason, he put his hands out in front of him, palms outward as if to show he wasn't carrying anything. No harpoons!
Hermes didn't even know if merpeople spoke the same language as the people in Primula. Maybe all of this just sounded like garble.

The mermaid had removed herself from the only thing that could hide her in these waters, except for the water itself. The stones peering up from the surface of the ocean, scattered all around the peninsula, were oh so comforting and safe, but you couldn't live your life behind them forever. Not with Viola's curiosity at least.
The teal haired oceanid stared at the human for a moment, before realising that he was calling out to her. He had spotted her now, and he was talking to her.
Talking.
She swam a little closer, enough to be well within range of hearing, then tilted her head to his question. If she remembered him? Of course she did. Who wouldn't remember such a flamboyant human? And especially because he had spoken out to her.
Had tried to establish contact.
A smile escaped her, but as soon as she realised it she ducked under the water, shaking her head to herself. Why was she acting and thinking like a stupid lovestruck girl? She was far from that!
There was a smaller rock at the shoreline that she leaned herself on, then trying her best not to smile. "I remember you." Those simple words made Viola blush. Not anything too colourful, but enough to put a pink hue to her cheeks. However she still wouldn't let herself smile.
"You can talk," she said next, as if it was a rare thing for humans to talk. However, she had no idea how many humans actually talked or used their voices. She knew nothing of the ways of the human life, or body. "Hermes? I'm Viola."
What she would say after that, she wasn't sure. She hadn't exactly talked a lot to anyone recently, or even at all. Maybe she was getting rusty? But there was only one thing to do with that; keep at it.
"I'm sorry I splashed you the other day. That was not my intent. I had hoped I didn't alarm you, but it seems I was wrong to worry."

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=valign,top][atrb=style,width: 350px; padding: 15px; background-color: fbfbfb;] Hermes immediately matched her smile, though his with an air of confidence. So she really did remember him then? Hermes placed his hands on his hips, obviously pleased with something. Was it possible that she had been just as curious about him as he had been with her?
However, the next thing to come out of her mouth certainly caught him off guard. His arms fell to his sides and he looked at her quizzically. "Did you not think I could?" Hermes asked, lips pursed. He didn't say it mockingly, in fact, the wonder in his eyes was practically palpable. Did this mermaid -- Viola, was it? -- so inexperienced with humans that she was unaware of their language or speaking capabilities?
Slowly, he took a few steps closer. He didn't want to alarm her, but the distance between them was hardly suitable for a conversation. Plus, there was no way he could miss the flush in her cheeks. What a babe, right?
"Oh, it's nothing," he said, waving his hand as if to physically show him dismissing the incident. "It takes a lot to scare me off, honestly." The only alarming thing about what happened the last time they met was that she was something Hermes had never seen before, and it gave him an insatiable desire to learn more.
Hermes cleared his throat audibly and gestured to the rocks that Viola was leaned up against. They were still dry near the tops, so... "Hey, mind if I take a seat?" He didn't exactly wait for the answer. One wink later and Hermes was sauntering over and delicately seating himself on one of the rocks. He was careful not to get too close to her. Even Hermes was aware of personal space bubbles.
