-- Dakota-- Dakota jogged to the stables and the horses nickered as a hello. Dakota smiled petting their velvet noses as she passed their vast stalls. As she came to a stall that held a horse she'd been training for two weeks from today. She attached the halter and lead the mare outside. She headed for the round pen and the mare walked with a pep in her step holding her head high. Dakota chuckled and opened the gate. Dakota stood in the center of the round pen lunging the black mare with a white streak down the center of her face. She was very beautiful and Dakota had Nicknamed her Ebony. The mare tossed head tugging on the rope. Dakota chuckled and circled in the center of the ring as the mare trotted in circles. Dakota gave a flick of the whip to the ground and the mare picked up her pace into a smooth and methodical canter. All Dakota heard- or wanted to hear the sound of Ebony's hooves thundering down on the ground. Dakota slowed Ebony to a walk and watched the mare's muscles flex with each step. She'd be sold in no time. She'd make a very good wagon horse or any kind of horse for that matter. The mare's ears flickered and she looked at Dakota still walking steadily. Dakota turned her head looking for what Ebony was so focused on. Comet nickered softly from the barn and she turned her head to view the barn. Footsteps. Great. Dakota wasn't much of a talker. With another flick of the whip to the ground Ebony quickened to a trot. 271 Words

He was told by his boss to come here. Jake knew a girl worked here. But, why did it have to be a girl. The very same thing he had trouble talking with much less being around. “Why me?” Jake said to himself. Sure, he liked animals as much as the next person, but why did his boss demand that he come here? He entered the stables and looked around. Good no one was here. That meant he could go back to the blacksmith’s shop. “Hello?! Anyone here?! Besides horses!” The sixteen year old called out. He waited for an answer, but did not get one. He smiled to himself and skipped out the door. At least he could say to his boss that no one was there. It would kind of be the truth. Jake just did not wait until a person showed themselves. He only made it so far until he tripped over a brick, landing face first on the dirt. Why was he so clumsy? No one else in his family was as clumsy as him. The sixteen year old pulled himself off of the ground and bushed himself off. He looked around the farm again, hoping that no one was home. That is when he heard the sound of horse walking. Just great. That would mean that she was home and that he would have to work. Jake let out another sigh. Now the problem was that he had forgotten the reason to which why he was here in the first place. He had his mind on trying to get out of work, not on working itself. Wasn’t he here to help the girl, who lived here, with some horses shoe…? Or was it something entirely different? Either way she was bound to know the reason why the kid was here. Otherwise, he would be pretty much screwed. I'm on my way coded by mtqc of ote } WORDS: 320 LYRICS: YELLOWCARD STATUS: COMPLETE |

-- Dakota-- Dakota continued to lunge Ebony until she heard a thud. Now she couldn't ignore who was here. Well she could but, that wouldn't be right! Dakota swung the gate open and ran over to Ebony and tossed the rope over the mares neck. Ebony was startled but, she trusted Dakota and trotted over to where the sound had come from. A kid about her age laying on the ground. She dismounted from Ebony. Before moving she tired Ebony to the nearby fence. "Are you OK or do I need to call a doctor?" Her small cheap cell phone was out in her hand. She knew how to treat a horse's wound but not a person's. Dakota sighed and Ebony paws the ground and shook her head in frustration. "Give me one second." Dakota took Ebony and let her into the pen that the fence contained. She slipped the halter off and shut the gate sending the mare at a bound her legs kicking up to strike the air like an invisible target. Dakota wanted to stay and watch but, she kind of had a fallen person on the ground. She jogged back and put a hand out to help him up. Dakota then went quite waiting for him to respond or get up or make a movement that signaled he was OK. She really wasn't sure what to do now so she relaxed and waited. Maybe being raised around horses did have it vices. Then something occurred to Dakota. She'd mad a appointment to get some new shoes put on the horses and get a crooked one fixed. 271 Words

There had to be someone here. He came here for reason even though he had forgotten it. Yet again the idiot was not paying much attention to where he was going and tripped over something. He pulled himself off of the ground and on to his feet. Why was he was clumsy? He sighed, brushing himself off. At least he didn’t hurt himself somehow. That is when the girl confronted him. “I-I’m fine. Just tripped…” He said, rubbing the back of his neck. It was only a matter of seconds and he already felt the nervousness coming. He stayed silent for a minute or two before actually remembering that there was reason to why he was here. Now what was it again? He couldn’t remember it to save his life. The sixteen year old decided to introduce himself instead. “I’m Jake Cartney. The Blacksmith’s apprentice…” He trailed off unsure of what to say. He could only wish that she knew the reason why he was here. Otherwise that would mean going back to the stop to get yelled at for forgetting his duties. “Well… I’m….” He cut himself off before he said anything stupid. His face was little flustered. Jake could feel his heart begin to pound within his chest. As long as the two kept there distance, he would be fine. He wanted to flee more than anything at the moment. However, he knew that he couldn’t. The kid was supposed to be working. He didn’t have time for his fear of talking to girls get in the way of that. “Never mind!” Jake blurted out. He had to act brave for now at least. He would just have to focus his mind on work and nothing else. He could only hope that would be enough. -- Dakota-- "Oh the blacksmith's apprentice? I'd suppose you know how to fix a crooked horseshoe and how to put on on then?" As stupid as this question sounded Dakota had had people from other places come to shoe her horses that didn't even know what side the shoe faced. Dakota could shoe herself but, she had some extra cash lying around and figured it would give her a break even if she still had to follow him around. Dakota didn't like to sit down unless it was in a saddle. To prove this her hair wasn't exactly neat and she was dusty from brushing the horses off. Not to mention the mud on her boots from the ring and cleaning horses feet. Ebony lifted a foot then shifted her weight and blew out a neigh. Dakota waited for his reply. If he know how to shoe that was great if not he could march right back to his shop and learn how to. A chorus of neighs lifted into the air as Comet and Ebony began to chatter and the horses in the barn commented on the conversation. A faint smile lit her face. The horses could be so funny. 199 Words

He probably just should have kept his mouth shut. He was still in training, so he didn’t know how to fix a horseshoe. But, then why did his boss demand that he come here then? Jake gave up on trying to figure out the answer. It wouldn’t make much sense if he knew anyway. At least now he knew the reason to which why he was here. “I guess…” He lied. Jake had to be one of the worse liars out there. Which is why he would always get caught doing something he wasn’t supposed to. To tell the truth, He had no idea how to, but he could still learn. The sixteen year old was kind of a fast learner when he was forced to learn something. He stayed silent waiting for her reply back. This was kind of nerve racking. Jake still didn’t know her name. Plus, she did not seem like she even cared for him being here. He could guess that was a good thing. He wouldn’t have to worry about fainting if she got too close to him. The girl before him looks like she cared more about the horse anyway. If he did faint, he could only guess that she would leave him. “What is your name by the way?” Jake asked, titling his head to the side. He could have sworn he seen her around town before, but never got the chance to actually meet her face to face. He cursed himself for not staying quiet. Staying silent was something that was hard to do for someone like him. Someone was actually lucky when they even got the chance to see this side of the kid. For now, he could only hope for that she believed his lie. More than anything, he did not want to go back to the shop. At least here he would be able to slack off some. Or he hoped so.
