history
the mine shop may be a recent addition in town, but the mckenna family has been in the business since god knows when. dylan's father was a miner and his father before him. they had always been a very "down to earth" group (pardon the pun) and that was how dylan was raised. however, he himself isn't a native to primula. how he got here is a whole story in itself.
originally from a mountainous town set north of the quercus woods, the mckennas weren't particularly rich: in fact, they could be safely called "poor." dylan thus didn't have much of a formal education, as he spent much of his childhood chopping wood and doing chores around the house, which later evolved to working in the mines in his teens. his parents tried sending him to school when he was entering middle school, their rationale being that teachers would do a better job than they ever would, but the poor kid just didn't fit in and his parents pulled him out after two years. even now, dylan keeps a few high school and early-college textbooks under the counter in the shop to read in a down time.
the one thing that came naturally to him were minerals. dylan found himself to have an almost supernatural ability to identify gemstones and metals from mere sight, something that his father and older brothers would use to determine if they struck a good vein during a day's work. this served the family well for quite a while.
flash back to two years ago. it had been only the day before that the mckennas pinpointed a new lode underground, in a recently excavated tunnel. now, on dylan's day off, news came in of a cave-in at that same mine tunnel. hustling along the rest of his family, grimly understanding what had happened, he watched as his father and middle brother stumbled out of the choking clouds of coal dust. they waited, and waited, but still one was missing.
the eldest would never surface again.
dylan felt incredibly guilty because of this - he felt that he had abandoned his brother to let him die. packing up the money he made from discoveries and appraisals at the mine, he wandered southwards, until he came across primula. seeing as they were getting into the precious stone industry rather late, he decided to open up a small rock supply store. the store has grown over the last few years, but even still dylan approaches each gaping mineshaft with trepidation at best and outright fear at worst.
