Okay! So I've been wondering this for a while and thought I'd see what everyone else's opinions were on this particular subject. At what point is it acceptable to use a character as a face claim? Of course, you always have to follow the guidelines set down by the staff of each individual site, but there are some things that are hard to decide if it's alright to use. For instance, Homestuck has become very widely known and the face claims are generally okay'd by site staff. But what about webcomics that haven't become popular? I've seen some absolutely amazing characters I would love to use for face claims from lesser known webcomics, but is it okay to use them? Sites have a face claim directory that shows the character isn't original, but does that make it okay? At what point of popularity is it alright to use a character as a face claim?
Also, am I making any sense when I ask this question or do I suck at wording things? xD [/blockquote]

i think the question makes sense, so there's no need to worry about that in general though, i'm pretty sure characters from lesser known webcomics would be fine to use as fcs? i know the rl community has stricter guidelines on who's okay to use and who's not, but i think for the animanga community, pretty much anything goes so as long as it's drawn lol. it's not a webcomic, but i've seen someone fc matt from two best friends play on a pretty popular site, so i'd personally say chars from lesser known webcomics would be fine lol, maybe even more welcome to get them some exposure. it doesn't hurt to ask site staff of specific boards if you're unsure though.

whenever i host a site, i only put restrictions on:
1. original character artwork that isn't part of an overarching series; 2. characters whose appearances don't fit the roleplay itself; 3. 3D faces on a non-3D (aka non-videogame) site; 4. characters from the series canon if it's a non-canon fandom roleplay.
under my logic, webcomics are fine provided you properly source them and the author hasn't said you can't use their art. the homestuck trolls, however, are a different story. i wouldn't let people use them on an real life-style site or one in which grey skin and candy horns would be looked upon oddly by the vast amount of the populace..
