[atrb=valign,top][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=style,width:50px; border-right: 25px solid #DDE0FF;] | [atrb=style, background:#fafafa; width: 300px; padding: 20px;] It was safe to say that Josiah had really needed that vacation. It was kind of ad-libbed, he just decided one day that he needed to get out of the town, off the peninsula and away from all that was stressing him...namely his father. Despite trying to seem apathetic about it all, some of his words really got to Josiah and the black-haired man couldn't really handle it anymore. So, without a word to his parents he packed up and left. For two months.
The only person he told was Aveline, of course. His parents couldn't really do anything about him just up and leaving, but Aveline could. She could fire him. And as much as he wasn't a super hard-worker there, he didn't want to lose the only job he had. A job his father helped him get, because he was a med school 'flunk out' and if he lost that job his dad would have even more shit to gripe about.
Even though he told Aveline, though, it was by no means a professional way to ask for time off. He had walked into work one day, told her he was going on a vacation starting today and ending some time in the future. She had objected, of course, saying things like 'who else am I supposed to harrass,' 'what if someone needs a shot?' and 'but Joe, I'll be lonely!' It had all fallen on deaf ears, however, as the man had shrugged, told her (in the politest way) to get over it, and left.
That was two months ago, and he was finally coming back in to town. He had started in Victorialis city and had visited other parts of the mainland. Even though he wasn't a doctor he made decent scratch at the hospital, so he could afford to bum around for two months, relaxing and seeing new parts of the world. So when he returned, one would expect him to be, you know, different. Happier, lighter, a bit more caring about the world around him.
Unfortunately, this is Josiah Waters we are talking about here. The man came back just as sarcastic, apathetic and droll as ever. He had returned on a Saturday but didn't bother going in to work for the weekend. But on Monday morning he supposed it was back to the old grind, getting up early enough and getting to work right around when he was supposed to. Or something. Aveline wasn't stingy about when he came in...or maybe she was and he simply just didn't care.
Walking into the office he logged into the computer at the front desk, dusting off his stuff. Apparently no one had even touched anything for the whole time he was gone. This was both a blessing and a curse, because for one...he didn't like his shit being touched. However, how did this place manage to stay afloat? Still, after he got everything re-organized up at his desk he got out of the office chair, said chair in question rolling back a few inches from the force of the movement as he took a few strides to peek in the back room where Aveline kept her office, where she usually could be found when there was absolutely nothing to do, like usual.
"Honey, I'm home," he called out in monotone, loud enough so his voice would carry through the small crack of an opening that separated Ave's office door from the frame. |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,bTable][atrb=style, width:300px;]私はあなたを思い出した i remembered you | [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,bTable][atrb=style, width:300px;] Honestly, she didn't know why she even bothered hiring new help around the place. Every nurse she ever had ended up leaving for some god awful reason like they needed to find themselves or their true purpose in life. Or they complained about how slow life was in Primula. They weren't on constant call and they could afford to sleep. But it wasn't what they wanted. It wasn't what their training planned for them to do. It wasn't what they planned for their life to be. So often times, they'd leave without so much as a word to her. And as per usual, Aveline would have to hear it from the grapevine nearly months after their departure in the first place.
She tapped her fingers on her desk, the woman leaning back in her chair and groaning. Maybe this wasn't what she wanted for her life either. Aveline leaned forward, crossing her arms and resting her head atop them. It wasn't what she wanted. She wanted to get to help save lives and help people. Genuinely help people. But... it didn't seem like that was ever going to happen. It wasn't that she wished for the townspeople to get sick. And it wasn't that she wanted them to be hurt. But, if they could have come in every so often. Just for a conversation. She wouldn't have minded it terribly.
Maybe she should have just moved back home, she thought. But she couldn't very well leave the town without an adequate doctor, could she? It would have been unfair to all of them. Maybe they could have gotten a doctor who could actually handle needles and blood ... she shuddered at the thought. Maybe it really was time to pack up her things and leave? Ah, she really didn't know anymore ... Aveline sat up quietly, moving to turn on her computer and try to find something - if she could even do anything on this horribly slow internet connection - to do. She supposed she couldn't leave even if she wanted to. The people in the town were nice enough. And even if she wasn't getting to do very much, that was okay too.
She clicked, typing every so often as she reorganized her files on her computer before hearing an all too familiar voice. Eh? He actually came back? She wouldn't deny it. She had been expecting that when the other said he would be on a vacation that he would undoubtedly leave as well. Just like the rest of her hired staff.
She turned in her chair, crossing her arms over her chest quietly as the woman peeked at the crack between the door and the door frame. She couldn't really help but be a little relieved. She didn't have to go find more help or end up playing solitaire again. Too many rounds of that game had really done a number to her sanity. "Took you long enough." She replied, heaving herself out of the chair before pulling the door wider. Aveline leaned on the door frame, looking up at the other. Her lips quirking up into a small smile.
"Welcome back, honey."

[atrb=valign,top][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=style,width:50px; border-right: 25px solid #DDE0FF;] | [atrb=style, background:#fafafa; width: 300px; padding: 20px;] A small smirk cracked upon his lips as she opened the door a bit wider, the raven-haired woman leaning against the door frame as she looked across the exam room at him. It was dark, of course, as no lights needed to be on when there were no patients — save for the light filtering through the semi-opaque shades that covered the windows. It wasn't a traditional hospital, as Primula wasn't very big; it was a small building and there wasn't much to it, really.
"Did you miss me?" he asked, still joking around with her. Well, she probably did miss him, considering there was no one else here to give shots or take blood while he was gone. If it had been say, a week-long trip, that would be one thing. They didn't get many patients in a week. But two months was completely different. There could've been an influx of kids who needed blood transfusions or something. Well, probably not; something that serious usually went to the big hospitals in the big city, but that was neither here nor there.
Walking back out to his desk, he knew she'd follow him if she wanted to talk. Besides, sitting back in her office playing solitaire or whatever she did was probably getting boring, so he just had a feeling he'd hear those heels clicking across the linoleum tiled floor, a horrendous choice for fashion but practical for clean ups and the like. Clean ups that he'd have to return to doing as well. Since there were no nurses anymore, he'd been playing double duty, and that had royally sucked. Especially last winter and early spring when there was a flu breakout and there were tons of puking kids in the office.
"So how did you manage to survive the past few months?" he asked, mostly as a way to get some sort of conversation started — he wasn't one for just idle chatting but he had to do something so she wouldn't just be staring over his shoulder, watching everything he was doing...which was organizing a pile of files she had just left on his desk instead of filing herself. Sometimes he wondered why he cared so much about his job. Curse that work ethic he must've inherited from his father. |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,bTable][atrb=style, width:300px;]私はあなたを思い出した i remembered you | [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,bTable][atrb=style, width:300px;] Aveline could only roll her eyes in reply. Miss him? Well, maybe a little. But she wasn't so sure that she wanted to admit that to him in the first place. She didn't doubt that he would have made fun of her the minute she made this information be known. Granted, he was far enough away that she wouldn't have been able to see. But she could feel it. And she just knew it that he would make that stupid face that said it all. "Miss you? You must be joking."
She flicked off the light switch inside of her office before moving to turn on the lights to the exam room. She wouldn't have wanted to trip over anything or ... end up dying on the ground or breaking her own ankle. How humiliating would that have been? A doctor breaking her ankle in a doctor's office. Aveline shoved her hands into the pockets of her white coat, stepping out across the linoleum floor with the familiar clacking that her heels made. It wasn't exactly practical to wear them, she knew. But hell if that would stop her. Besides, it wasn't her job to clean up anything. Well not anymore anyways. She'd leave that up to her ever faithful secretary - pardon her, receptionist - to take care of now that he had returned.
The doctor sauntered over towards the desk, leaning over it and crossing her arms quietly against the counter. She had left it untouched for the most part, though she wasn't really sure why she had. It wasn't that it hadn't occurred to her that maybe he would come back in the first place. She hadn't heard of his possibly permanent departure from anyone though, she thought. So perhaps that was what kept her from getting rid of the desk entirely. Aveline had even managed to keep herself from asking his father where he might have been, deciding that it was none of her business in the first place.
"I had to do all the work myself." She shuddered at the thought, closing her eyes in fear. Ugh. Needles and blood, oh my. She never ever wanted to do that again. Definitely not. It was so gross. And it was disgusting and she just. Ugh, never. Never again. "I should've punished you for abandoning me like that. Could have at least found a replacement to help me, you know." Not that there was very much for either of them to rely on. Most of the hospital staff bailed in the first week. Not to mention the other citizens had their own jobs and priorities. It wouldn't have been fair to ask them when she could have just as easily done it herself. ... not that she wanted to do it in the first place.
"What about you? Did you miss me?" Probably not.

[atrb=valign,top][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=style,width:50px; border-right: 25px solid #DDE0FF;] | [atrb=style, background:#fafafa; width: 300px; padding: 20px;] "I'm sure you didn't," he mused almost playfully as he sat at his desk, and soon enough, he heard Ave's impractical heels clicking across the floor as she entered the front room from the examination room. It really was a small hospital, and he wondered if one could even consider calling it a hospital in the first place. It was barely the size of a clinic. Then again, Sepalum wasn't a big city by any means, so it didn't need a huge hospital like the cities.
A little smirk tugged on his lips as she spoke. "Punish me, huh?" he reiterated, raising his eyebrows. "Sounds interesting. And find a replacement?" the man continued, blowing a curt puff of air out of his nose at the thought. "It'd be easier to find a needle in a haystack, and I'm sure there are plenty of haystacks we could go find around here."
It was true. The nurses never stuck around. Damn, why were they such flakes? They went to school longer than he did and they ditch within a week, and he'd been here for...well, he didn't know. Eventually he'd stopped counting the days until his retirement and gave up, apathetic about it already. How he had the drive to come back to work every day was a mystery to everyone, including himself.
Then she turned the question back on him. Did he miss her? Well...normally, Josiah would flat out refute that statement and probably let out a dry chuckle in her face. The only person he ever really "missed" was his mother, and that was because she wasn't a royal asshole. Aveline wasn't really either, but she definitely could be a thorn in his side. But it was strange, he didn't want to say...no.
"Sure I did," he responded without much of a facial expression, playing it off like he was going against her own answer to the question to make her look bad. "I guess I know how you feel about me now, though; thanks a lot." |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,bTable][atrb=style, width:300px;]私はあなたを思い出した i remembered you | [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,bTable][atrb=style, width:300px;] Alright, well. Okay. It wasn't a little. It was more like. Like a lot. It was dumb and stupid but she had missed him. He was a jerk too so she didn't even know why she missed him at all! He wasn't cute either! Maybe a little. But not by a lot! Not by a long shot! The only reason she probably missed him was just because the only people she really ever talked to was Aurelio, but even then. He had his own things to do and his own life to live so she couldn't very well impose on that! Besides that, everyone else had their own things to do. It was all really quite troubling in the end when she had all this time on her hands and no one to waste it with.
"Yeah, punishment!" She replied, huffing with annoyance. What should she make him do? Kiss her feet or carry her everywhere? Nice as these heels were, they were killer on her feet. Or maybe just make him do his job? Yeah, that was punishment enough even though the carrying thing sounded like seriously a good idea the longer she stood there and shifted on her feet. "I'll think of something, so you can just keep wondering. And suffer." Aveline wiggled her fingers at him, a soft giggle escaping her before she let her arms drop back to her side. Totally mature. Totally.
Finding a replacement was harder than she made it out to be. No one ever stuck around for long enough that she could actually manage to pay them more than a week's salary. It was probably because the hospital didn't get a lot of income because almost nothing ever happened in the town except for mild colds and fevers. Even then, it wasn't that big of a deal. They probably moved onto bigger and better things which, although good for them, made things much harder on her behalf. Aveline sighed, resting her forehead against the counter a bit miserably. "Tell me about it. Getting just one nurse is impossible enough as it is."
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold the phone. He missed her? Josiah Waters missed her? Her eyes widened to the size of dinner plates, a soft pink blooming on her otherwise ivory cheeks. She snorted, covering her mouth slightly as she looked away. Staring in the general direction of the entrance to the clinic. Geez, this guy. He was probably just joking too. Just to get a reaction out of her. "Alright, well." She drawled out, tapping her chin thoughtfully. "I guess I missed you a little bit. Don't look too much into it." A grin.
"I know. I have that effect on men. Don't worry, it'll wear off and you can bask in the fact that I maybe sort of missed you."

[atrb=valign,top][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=style,width:50px; border-right: 25px solid #DDE0FF;] | [atrb=style, background:#fafafa; width: 300px; padding: 20px;] He glanced up, managing to see a blush blooming across the tops of Aveline's cheeks, just for a moment. What was that for? Smirking a little, he decided to take full advantage of the situation, if only to tease her a little bit. It was always a lot of fun. Even if he wasn't joking before, now he was, and it was for the reaction. Josiah didn't know what was so fun about getting a rise out of someone, but it just was.
"Oh, you did?" he responded rhetorically, standing up from his swivel chair, the seat spinning a bit from the force in which he stood up. "I'm so...happy to hear that." A smile crossed his lips for a moment before he reached out with his long arms and pulled the woman into a hug. Aveline wasn't terribly tall but Josiah could rest his chin on her head, so he did so, embracing her for a while with a smirk toying on his lips.
After a few moments he pulled away, looking down at her with a smirk, sitting back down in his chair like nothing had happened. He wondered what she would do, what would she say? Would that cute blush cross her cheeks again?
Wait, hold the phone. Nope. Aveline's blush wasn't cute. Why on earth did he think that? It was stupid. Stupid blush. And he was stupid for thinking that. Trying to get his mind off of things he looked down at the stack of patient forms on his desk. Opening the filing cabinet he started to file them away alphabetically, slipping forms into pre-marked folders and pulling out new folders if the patient hadn't been to the hospital before.
"Don't you have work to do yourself?" he asked in a monotone voice that ironically suggested apathy. |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,bTable][atrb=style, width:300px;]私はあなたを思い出した i remembered you | [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,bTable][atrb=style, width:300px;] Aah, she hated when her body wanted to betray what she had said. She was trying to play it cool but no. Nope, apparently that was a cue for her face to go into flames. Or at least, that's what it felt like. Aveline had turned away for a brief moment, resting her hands on her heated cheeks and rubbing at them as if willing for the hue to disappear from her sight. It was annoying. Definitely annoying. Joe was probably getting all smug about it. He was probably thinking that he was so cool for getting her all embarrassed. Well, it was his fault for saying something weird like that! Who would have known, right? It just ... you know. Wasn't something she expected to hear from that guy.
And the surprises kept coming when the other rose from his chair and reached out, wrapping his arms around her and tugging her in close. A hug? The color only darkened, her eyes wide in surprise. The woman remained still, unsure of herself and what she was supposed to do. This was a friend hug, so it was alright? Yeah, definitely. She had no reason to be alarmed. So why couldn't she look him in the eye? Or you know. Shove him or something. Aah, it was nothing important ... she moved almost robotically, wrapping her arms around the other too and resting her forehead against his shoulder. When he pulled away though, Aveline decided that she wouldn't be the only one that would be embarrassed. Her hands drifted lower, pinching at the man's backside before she pulled away and rested her hands on her hips. A grin playing on her lips just as usual.
She turned away, glancing at the desk and making sure there as nothing in the way before she sat down. Supporting her head on her hands and leaning over so her elbows would be on her knees. "Does it look like I have anything to do?" She replied, straightening up and gesturing towards the clinic. It was really boring in the sleepy town of Primula. She had been hoping that there would be more work for her here but it didn't seem like it. She supposed it was a nice enough place at least. The town paid for her to stay here after all. She didn't have to pay for any real bills outside of buying food but that was a given. Still, she thought. She didn't want to be too out of practice when the time came and someone really did need a doctor.
"So, what've you been doing in Victorialis? Unless you went somewhere else?"

[atrb=valign,top][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=style,width:50px; border-right: 25px solid #DDE0FF;] | [atrb=style, background:#fafafa; width: 300px; padding: 20px;] The fact that she was blushing was almost...funny to him. It also made a few stupid butterflies flutter in his stomach, but that was probably just the dodgy Mexican food he ate last night for dinner. He definitely was not a little bit happy to see that maybe Aveline had some sort of feelings for him, since she was blushing so much. He definitely didn't have feelings for her either. It was stupid. And it didn't exist. Maybe if he denied everything enough it wouldn't be real.
"We never have anything to do," he sighed, a bit overdramatically. And it was true. There was nothing to do in this town. It was boring and useless and honestly, going to work and having nothing to do was really, really horrible. He could be at home doing something better, like...sleeping, or eating, but he needed to get paid. And he didn't do anything to get paid. While it sounded like a slacker's dream, Josiah knew better. He was lazy enough and this was torture.
He glanced up when she mentioned Victorialis. Was she trying to start a conversation? While Josiah liked to seem like he didn't give a damn about anything, conversation was more than welcomed right now. "Yeah, I went to Victorialis. And it was a good vacation. I actually have a family there now. I have a beautiful wife named Alanna. Our first child is on the way. And we have the most adorable Shiba Inu you could ever see. Her name is Pumpkin. I just decided to come back to Primula because I missed my wonderful, wonderful boss."
While he was obviously joking, he schpieled it off like it was no big deal whatsoever. Really, he was just waiting to see what her reaction would be. Maybe she'd get jealous. He hoped she would. |
