TAGS Nerine WORDS 255 NOTES One lazy day. Holding back a yawn with a hand, Fenryl briefly rubbed his watery grey eyes after glaring up to the clear blue sky. Dangling his bare feet from the pier of the beach into the waves, the tide was high enough to allow a half-transformation into fish fins to his knees. As his tail idly swished into the waves however, the Merman brought his weary gaze to the fishing pole in his hands and the bobbing bait in the water.
The water rippled, time ticking onwards.
Suddenly his nose twitched and his stomach gurgled a little as he noticed at a few fish carelessly swimming around the bait, teetering on whether to jump for it. The glare only intensified upon seeing how unappetizing they looked, not to mention them being cheap sea bass to boot. But no matter. It was better than an empty stomach, or an empty wallet for that matter.
But as frustrating as it was to watch his dinner refuse his call, he could appreciate the peace. There was the gentle lull of the waves washing on the beach, the mild whistling of the sea breeze across the shore and if you listened closely, you could hear a whole orchestra of cicadas bleating their calls all the way from Quercus Woods. Perhaps one day once he’d fine-tuned his Merman magic enough, he’d visit those woods.
Really, the last thing he needed was a surprise visit. That’d mean painfully wrenching himself out of his transformation for one, and try not to show it. But what if something did disturb his reverie?
Doomsday, he decided grimly.

| [cs=2] Summer was a dangerous season to be a scavenger.
In winter, fall, and early spring, the shallow waters surrounding the dock and harbor were usually lacking in visitors. The two-legged civilians turned up their noses to the colder temperatures, opting instead to crowd the sandy shore when the weather was hotter. In many ways, the red-headed mermaid despised the activity cloudless, humid days entailed. It required her to maintain her distance, watching with curious but perpetually cautious eyes. Normally she would wander towards the coast unhindered with the promise of unique treasures, but now that heat had invaded the peninsula, Nerine held back, fearful of being discovered by the splashing and noisy throngs of half-naked humans. Yet as the hours turned into days, and the days turned into weeks, she grew restless.
Why couldn't they just leave?
The open water was boring and uneventful enough, even when she did spend her days scouring the sandy floor for trinkets to add to her collection. But their presence just made everything drag. Nerine couldn't bring herself to dislike them too much, though, because once they retired to the warmth of their own homes when the water gradually cooled, all of the forgotten possessions stranded on the beach were hers for the taking. They were an inconvenience to her way of life, yes - but the rewards soon to come were encouraging. She just had to be patient. On this day, though, Nerine was particularly antsy. The beach's energy was dwindling, though why she couldn't figure, and the urge to wander closer in the face of lessened risk dominated her mind. Presently, she paced through the turquoise depths, groaning with inner turmoil, emerald scales shining with iridescent rainbows wherever they caught the sun. "Ugh." She spat, her full bottom lip turning over in a displeased pout, spinning sharply and swimming back in the opposite direction, her agitation apparent in the aggressive way she threw herself through the endless blue. "Okay, just-" She said to herself, stopping suddenly, jerking her attention in the direction of the pier.
She was bored, impatient, and growing increasingly grumpy. If she didn't do something soon, she thought she might lose her mind. "Just for fifteen minutes!" Nerine declared to herself resolutely, feeling a lousy sense of justification for meandering closer to the seaboard. But it was enough to satisfy her, and so she slowly ambled to the creaky, paint-chipped wharf, knowing that she could hide in the shadows underneath the wooden obstruction rather than risk being spotted in clearer, depth-less waters. Her approach was cautious; she stopped periodically to peek at the surface, wary of any unexpected arrivals. But soon she found herself only a short distance away from the barnacle-smothered pillars, staring up at what were an unmistakable pair of feet.
She hadn't expected this.
Nerine shrunk, sinking towards the sandy carpet, hoping that in doing so she omitted her chances of being noticed. She considered turning tail and running, fleeing the scene and simply scolding herself for even roaming so near to shore. But... she'd never been so close to a human before. Surely, she could just.... take one look? Driven by an unquenchable curiosity, Nerine slowly lifted herself from the floor, auburn hair billowing like a weightless cloud, her rising figure somewhat obscured by the shadow of the dock. Through the shimmering lull of the gentle waves, she could make out a vague silhouette, perched on the edge of the wharf. And the human was holding... a stick? The mermaid ascended another few feet, blue eyes wide with wonder, mulling over the functions of such an object. That would be a wondrous addition to her collection!
She rose ever so slightly, drawn like a moth to a flame, but then stopped short when something pricked her ear. Nerine flinched, backpedaling through the water to spin and investigate what it was that had touched her. It was... she had no idea. The gadget was small, silver, curved like the tail of a seahorse, a colorful yet dead fish suspended on it's extremities. The mermaid's eyebrows pinched together in puzzlement, before lifting a handle to touch the alien item. She yelped, immediately regretting the decision - it was sharp - and darted to the right, away from the harmful contraption, suckling a bleeding finger.
Nerine didn't get far, before the intricate hooks tangled in her flourishing red hair. She nearly shrieked, flashes of pain rippling through her scalp as the device yanked her back, and she struggled against it. "Ow ow ow- get off!" The mermaid cried desperately, spinning in the water to grip the transparent wire to which the thing was attached, tears welling in her eyes as fearful instinct overwhelmed her. She followed the firm string with her fingers, searching for the tool knotted in her flowing locks. "Get out, get out, get out get out" Nerine whimpered, turning once more to release the tension, to provide the pain a reprieve, furiously attempting to remove the instrument. She could only hope that the human nestled on the pier above her was oblivious to her endeavor - otherwise she'd certainly compromised her cover.

TAGS Nerine WORDS 395 NOTES ~ Stifling another yawn, Fenryl frowned at the waters. It seemed a little…agitated. Ripples blossomed on the surface frequently around the pier, and little eddies churned around the wooden pillars. He couldn’t see clearly through the murky deep salt waters, but it didn’t make sense for any big fish to be this close to shore…
The line bobbed a little then, inciting a deeper frown as Fenryl couldn’t see any fish near the surface anymore. But it wasn’t until he felt the tug that he snapped into action, enough to startle him into turning human, standing up on the pier to tug on the pole and reel in the catch.
Sure is big! Fenryl grunted, biting his lip. But then the splashing of the water grew large and vigorous, bubbles foaming the surface.
Suddenly his stomach plummeted as he noticed a scaly hand beneath the waves.
He didn’t need to think. He didn’t need to consider all the innumerable consequences about interacting with one of his kind, but he knew, he knew that Merfolk were a xenophobic species and hardly interacted with humans. Seeing them around the Peninsula in the first place was a rarity.
And with no sharp rocks around to cut the line, Fenryl took in a breath and dove off the pier, simultaneously transforming back to a Merman. His vision and hearing sharpened, instantly seeing a red-headed mermaid flailing in the water, the hook entwined in her hair.
His fish muscles burned from the exercise, and his gills refused to work properly, so he had to act fast.
Flapping his tail as much as he could, he nearly bumped into her as her hands were searching her hair, and Fenryl tried to meet her gaze, trying to reassure her without speaking. Gaze firm, grey eyes pierced hers, before glancing to the problem.
With agile dexterity, he took the hook in her flowing red hair, pulling it out as gently as possible as he grabbed the head of the hook. And with a backward glance with a curt nod, he’d quickly tail back to the pier, line and hook in hand.
Gasping for breath, he clawed at the pier, groaning at the transformation once more. Clothes appeared, sticking to his human skin. The air burned in his lungs, collapsing onto the sweet solid construct.
But he closed his eyes. He had saved a Merperson.
Heh…never thought I’d see the day…

THE BEARERS OF ALL GOOD THINGS TO ARRIVE, CLIMB INSIDE US TWIST AND CRY. A KISS ON YOUR MOLTEN EYES ❞ ---- It was a fine day for loitering around, a very fine day indeed. The sun was as high as it was ever, the clouds only a few to see, and Viola was out and about on a midday swim along the sandy bottom of the Orchis sea. She was headed for one of the islands, just to look around because, well, what other things had she to do with her days.
The turquoise haired mermaid had no job, or no community to thrive in, so she spent her days endlessly roaming around. It was even a wonder why she hadn't left already, as there really wasn't that much to do around these parts, but she didn't feel like the time was ready for another departure.
She had seen a couple of other merpeople, but they mostly kept to themselves, and it didn't seem like they had even shown themselves to the townspeople, which Viola thought was odd if they had lived there for some time. Why wouldn't they try to establish some sort of connection with them?
There was a bump to her lower fins, at which she looked down to see what it was, and spotted a school of fish swimming beneath her. She smiled, almost wanting to wave at them, play with them, but they were fish - they were food. Viola hated the taste of fish, however, and didn't like hunting them. They were just so fast.
The school swam by, seemingly careless to her presence, and Viola was left alone again. It was sad that that had been the peak of her day. At least so far.
Viola decided to continue to her destination, but as she passed by the length of the popular beach of the peninsula, she heard a cry and swam closer to get a better look. She noticed the source to be another mermaid, but she was caught in - something. She had no idea.
Her immediate instinct was to go over and help the poor girl, but before Viola could even move her tail, another merperson had arrived at the scene - a merman! Those were rare around the peninsula, she knew. What an extraordinary sight! Her hands caught the surprised gasp, covering her mouth, but she didn't move.
The sight was funny, however. The merman practically bumped into the poor mermaid - was he not used to swimming? - but it looked as if he knew his way around, well, whatever was in her hair. After he had gotten it out, he removed himself from her, then disappeared up onto the wooden wharf above.
Viola could only spot it through the shimmering roof of the water, as she wasn't even that close to see what had gone on that perfectly, but it was a strange sight she had been victim to. As fast as the merman had appeared, he was gone again, with the red haired mermaid left behind. Viola squinted, wondering if there was some sort of special ordeal they had going on. If they even knew each other.
Deciding to go over and ask if she was okay, Viola threw her tail around in the water and swam closer. When she knew she was close enough for the other girl to hear her, she stopped.
"Is everything okay? Did he hurt you?" After all, he could've just as well made things worse, as he could've helped her, from what she had seen.
