Dive deep in it, until thou hast lost thyself. And having lost thyself, then thou shalt find thyself again. Even as it is written, 'She had her dwelling in the great sea, and was a fish therein.'"
A lazy day is what it turned out to be. With her most recent job completed, it gave her plenty of time to do what she wanted. Acquiring a bottle, a writing utensil, and something to write on happened in varying degrees of difficulty. The occasional litterer left plenty of plastic bottles that would float on the surface of the waves. Traditional pen and paper were the challenge since part of it involved not getting either wet. Luck was on her side today and within the ten minute limitation of her spell, she retrieved both things she sought.
"From mine unfathomable will, the universe hath its beginning. In my boundless wisdom are the types and patterns of all things." Gabrielle rested the stationary on a carefully selected rock. Waves wouldn't splash against it in their journey to the shore, giving her the time needed to finish what she started to write. A momentary pause is all it took for her to start writing again, murmuring the words as she did so. "Changeless, this great deep of elemental water remaineth forever pure. Because of this, it possesseth the quality of stability. From water do all forms have their beginning."
Satisfaction flickered through her as she stuffed the stationary and pen into the waterproof bag she picked up. It would do little good to take it with her, but she could find somewhere and bury it to retrieve whenever she needed it. At the same time, the paper rolled up easily with only a little pressure and fit perfectly into the bottle she selected. A sea green tail, matching the unusual color a tendril of her hair possessed at the end, splashed against the water as she turned. The bottle along with the stationary would stay in her bag for awhile until she decided where to throw it.
For now, however, enjoying the sun would be her goal. The soaked blonde stretched out on the sand, letting her arms flop uselessly out to the side and her tail stay submerged. Caution never had been her strong point, nor was there a need for it here. Other places... mm, best to let those thoughts stay dormant. |

TAGS Gabrielle WORDS 432 NOTES Hey there Twiddling the metal pike between his fingers, Fenryl casually strolled on the beach, picking up rubbish, garbage and other equally unfriendly items for the environment with his pike. Sure it was dull menial work and given his state of magic use, he had to do this kind of job at least twice a week, but it was still work and still put food in his belly.
Scuffing his boots on the sand as he walked along it, Fenryl sighed, pulling his long purple hair behind his ears to bend to stab the trash. A bored expression crossed his face as he glared at it, but being here, on land…it was a thousand times more interesting than back in the water, even if he was forced to be near water constantly.
Deeply breathing in the salty breeze and feeling the wind sting his skin and play with his hair; this wasn’t something you got underwater. So many new experiences and feelings were above land, just as often as below it. His magenta clothes ruffled slightly then, feeling the sheathed sword on his hip bounce with his movement.
Grey eyes suddenly glinted as they passed over the sandy scenery. A coin! Pocketing the gold with a further twiddle of his fingers, he briefly smiled. But then, his heartbeat spiked as he noticed a figure on the beach, and their sea green tail.
Merperson… Fenryl’s eyes narrowed, adopting a frigidity and cautiousness before daring to approach.
She wasn’t…dead was she? No, there was the gentle rise of her chest…her act was almost like his own, forced to be half-submerged so frequently that is an annoyance and inconvenience in his daily schedule. There was a bag as well of human design, so perhaps she did come to land often… But it might also be the first time she was on land. What if she collapsed from exhaustion, unfamiliar with how to use her human form, or what if she was just waiting for someone and accidentally got washed ashore?
Knowing he might regret it, he tied the bin bag up and put away the pike before casually going over to check on the girl, leaving his things on the ground a few feet away. The light splashing of the water against his boots soaked to his skin, reminding him that he too would have to revert to his Merman form in a few more minutes.
Standing over the blonde-haired girl, Fenryl leant on his knees, his hair falling in front of his face. She looked fine at the very least…
“Miss, are you…okay?” he asked tentatively.

Galene left her little home fairly early — she hated sleeping very late — and went for a swim. She went out fairly far today, swimming so far away that the peninsula became a little mound on the horizon, swelling to the tip of Lillium Mountain. It was times like these that she felt so small, with the ocean surrounding her. To humans it might be scary or seem too vast, but to a mermaid, it was heaven.
After doing some fishing to gather a bit of a lunch for herself, she headed back to the peninsula, taking her time as she swam about. While she was a timid and shy girl in front of others, when she was alone she could be as outgoing and loud as she pleased. There was no one around to see her or judge her, so she jumped out of the water, practiced flips, and hummed or sang the whole while.
The joy of a free mermaid didn't last forever, though. All too soon the shores of the peninsula came into clear view and she calmed down her demeanor, the high of the open sea wearing off. As she approached, she swam by the beach to see if anyone was around. There always was, so she wasn't sure why she checked, but she did. It wouldn't take long, she'd just loop by and then swim back to her alcove to rest. All of the swimming and leaping had tired her out, after all.
When she swam by the beach, there were people, just as she'd expected. Or rather...one human, an odd looking one, and a mermaid lying asleep in the sun. The sun did feel nice, so she didn't blame her fellow merperson, but why was this strange human getting closer, poking around? He was wearing strange clothes, and then her mind jumped to the worst conclusion a young mermaid could jump to.
What if this man was a pirate?
Pirates had been attacking mermaids for a long time now, stealing them for who knows what. Galene knew this all too well. However, she was afraid. If this man was a pirate he could steal her too! Still, she couldn't sit back and watch this happen again. So, clearing her throat with a feeble grunt she went under the water to approach with a bit more stealth.
Popping out of the water not too far away she raised her voice the best she could, wishing it wasn't so weak and wavering. "Hey!" she cried, trying to seem intimidating (but that was hard for a slim mermaid of her stature). "L-leave that mermaid alone, you can't take her!" |

TAGS Gabrielle, Galene WORDS 385 NOTES Feel free to keep posting if/when you come back soleil Cocking his head slightly at this peculiar beached Mermaid, Fenryl rubbed his chin slightly. She was out like a light, sleeping uncaringly like a baby, immune to the world. His voice didn’t even seem to reach her, and given the deepness of her sleep, he doubted he could (or should) wake her up. But still, Fenryl swept a cautious eye around the beach and the rippling ocean waves, looking for signs of suspicious activity.
Being so out in the open herer was just inviting a pirate attack and kidnapping and whilst Fenryl was confident he could fight them off, he couldn’t say he’d be lucky enough to fight them in human form where he was strongest.
So what to do… he thought, straightening and rubbing his chin. It’s dangerous to just leave her open for attack…
"Hey!" A sudden voice from the ocean cried.
Fenryl raised his head sharply at the noise, looking out curiously to the waves to see another blonde mermaid as the source of the voice. Her demeanour however, didn’t indicate that she was happy to see him. Grey eyes blinked at her expectantly, stuffing his hands in his pockets. The fact that she was trying to be somewhat intimidating though did put a slight smirk on his lips.
"L-Leave that mermaid alone, you can't take her!" she cried.
Realisation flooded him as grey eyes widened. The sword on his hip for one probably didn’t help. Well, best to be honest...
“You’re wrong!” he cried firmly out to her, above the noise of the waves against the shore. “I’m no pirate; I approached her because I’m worried she might be attacked by actual pirates!”
He could've said he was a Merperson too and leave it at that...but whilst he didn't really want to admit it, there existed Merpeople pirates too...that he knew all too well.
Turning around to pick up the pike and bin bag, he held up his hands defensively as if nothing was suspiciously about holding a potential weapon, and walked a few paces away from the sleeping mermaid to sit on a higher bank of the sand.
“I’ll stay till she wakes up,” he finished sheepishly, running a hand through long purple hair as he did so. Here’s hoping she’ll believe him but for now…
Leaning an arm on a raised knee, he’d stare out to the ocean looking slightly bored, hoping that the mermaid woke up soon so that he could be on his way. Wake her up? Well…he was a gentleman after all.

Then again, she had thought he was a pirate and even though he claimed he wasn't, she still had her doubts. Wouldn't that be what a pirate would say? 'It's okay, I'm not going to take her!' they would promise, and as soon as all the witnesses were gone the mermaid on shore would be snatched up and stolen, brought back to the ship like so many others before her.
So, instead of just swimming away (like she'd assume the man wanted her to do) she actually got a bit closer, swimming up behind the protection of a large rock jutting out of the water. Peering out from behind it her round blue eyes stayed trained on the scene, watching to make sure nothing unsavory was happening.
Purple was an odd hair color for a human. She'd seen plenty of purple haired merpeople and from the few magical beings she'd encountered, purple might be plausible with them. But never any humans, and definitely not pirates. While she wasn't sure if he was a pirate, now she wasn't even sure if he was human. He was...strange, but Galene couldn't approach him to ask him questions. She was much too afraid.
"I-I can watch her," she finally said to him, a bit defensive and all too afraid to seem convincing or compelling, but she had to try. She still didn't feel right about the situation and this young mermaid's life could be in danger. Both of their lives could be, her head reminded her, and she wished it hadn't. That was a nugget of information she hadn't wanted to remember. |

TAGS Gabrielle, Galene WORDS 337 NOTES ~ Whilst Fenryl maintained an aloof attitude to the Mermaid’s movements, he was still admittedly curious as to what brought another of his kind to the Peninsula. What was it that drew them to land, and human interaction? His was out of a need to survive, but willingly coming here and willingly taking the risk of being kidnapped by pirates as this sleeping one so aptly demonstrated? He couldn’t understand it.
But what if Merpeople all around the oceans were being forced to interact with humans out of a need for trade, politics, or simple curiosity? What if they were still as tormented by pirates and betrayals as they were when he was still part of the militia? He sighed, rubbing his temples. All this worrying…
“Hrm?” He raised his head then, noticing that the Mermaid out in the waves had come closer, hiding behind a large rock near to the shore.
"I-I can watch her,” she mumbled shyly. Fenryl blinked. But then a slight smile tugged at his lips.
It's so obvious she still doesn't believe me...honestly... he thought.
“You know,” he began softly, giving the Mermaid an all-knowing side-glance. “If I was a pirate – which I’m not – why would I be alone? They work in groups. Also a pirate wouldn’t care about you he knows you can’t stop him from the water; he’d take the sleeping one while he had the chance.”
At that moment then he put his hands behind his head, stretching as his ten minutes drew to a close, his legs melding back into grey, lifeless fins, lacklustre and powerless.
“Besides,” he continued as he moved into a push-up position facing the ocean, using the time to focus on building back his strength as he lean on his hands, the rest of his weight on the edge of his tail. “I can’t run far…in ten minutes.”
Down, up, down and up, he kept going a few times before speaking once more, his dorsal fin and stomach muscles feeling the burn.
“Name’s Fenryl, by the way,” he muttered, grunting in between each exercise.

However, the young maid hiding in the safety of the water behind the rock wasn't fully convinced until she noticed that his legs started to look funny, before transforming back into a long, grey tailfin.
She'd never seen a merperson with grey fins before. The colors were a tropical rainbow, even a wide variety of patterns that matched the fish in the ocean. But never had she seen such a grey, lifeless tailfin as that. Galene wondered if he came from a completely different area — could mermaids survive in other climates other than the tropics? — or if he was sick.
But still...he was a merman. Not a pirate. Well, merpeople could be pirates but he had already explained why he couldn't be one. And Galene didn't know why, but she believed him. Maybe because she'd never actually met a pirate and known how cunning and deceiving they could be.
"I-I'm sorry," she stammered, watching with strange curiosity as the merman flipped onto his stomach and started to do a strange...ritual? His fin was balancing on the ground as his arms bent and straightened, hoisting his body and up and down in a rhythmic motion. Glancing over at the sleeping mermaid on the beach (she was probably safe now), Galene swam away from the safety of her rock to get closer to the shore where this strange merman was doing his...thing.
Cocking her head to the side a little, she watched him for a moment. "Um, what are you doing...?" she finally asked, her voice quiet. She wasn't as timid now that she knew he was her own kind, which put her at a bit of ease. She had never been a good communicator but felt more comfortable around merpeople versus humans or the magical beings she had encountered on the peninsula. |

TAGS Gabrielle, Galene WORDS 427 NOTES ~ Fingers hooked into the sand, Fenryl’s stare down with the yellow grains continued. But within each encompassing moment of silence between him and the Mermaid, he could feel old muscles whining with each taxation, shaking underneath his own weight.
“I’m sorry,” the girl suddenly said.
Eyebrows lifting, the Merman raised his head in curiosity to the young girl. Suddenly she was hesitant and shy again, afraid of being impolite possibly. Or was she repenting for calling him a pirate?
Either way he leant on his forearm to raise his other hand in a carefree shaking of his hand.
“S’fine,” he muttered compliantly, offering a weak smile before resuming his exercise. “I’ve...been called worse.”
Feeling his palms grow sticky he curled them into fists before using those to push him from the ground instead, slowing his pace down as he felt each trickle of sweat pass by his cheeks. This might not be the most effective method of reviving his Merman muscles, but it was all he had. All he had to rely on.
Thoughts began to drift away, his focus merely on his exercises. The future, the past, all drifted away on the ocean waves…
"Um, what are you doing...?"
“Unf!”
Concentration lost, he collapsed into the sand, his hot sticky face getting a mouthful of it. Rolling to his back and rubbing and spitting out as much as he could, he frowned at the Mermaid upside-down. Blinking in mild surprise at her nearness only confused him momentarily before thinking back to her question…
He pondered for a moment, rolling onto his front, still trying to rid his face of sand. Well it wasn’t like push-ups could be done underwater easily…
“Exercis-…sorry,” he stopped himself, spitting out more sand from his tongue to the side before continuing. “Exercising,” he answered simply.
Having had enough of this irritating sand though, he pulled himself into Human form once more, groaning with the pain as he went. Clothes appearing, he jumped onto his feet, walking down the water’s edge to wash his face and obliterate all foreigners in his mouth.
“Strengthens the stomach and arm muscles,” he offered by way of explanation.
With his face and mouth clean though, he looked up to gaze upon the Mermaid that was lying in the shallows, melancholic and thoughtful. Settling down again cross-legged, curiosity continued to gleam in his grey eyes.
“What brings you to land?” he asked bluntly.
If he could know after all, perhaps he could help them stay away. Land was no place for any Merperson.

Still, it was unexpected, and when the man flipped to lay on his back he was frowning. Had she startled him with her question? The man did seem to be very absorbed in his...ritual. Whatever it was.
He said he was exercising. Galene was confused; merpeople didn't exercise. She wasn't even sure what that word meant, but she got the concept a bit more after he explained that it worked his arm and stomach muscles. Looking down at her own body, she wasn't exactly muscular, but she wasn't in bad shape at all. "Isn't swimming exercise?" she asked, a bit bluntly and naively. "I mean, you wouldn't have to go on land..."
She looked down shyly as he straightened himself up, spitting out the sand that had gotten in his mouth as he transformed back into a human. Glancing up, she could see flickers of pain pass through his expression, and wondered why on Earth he was so hell-bent on being in his human form if it was so painful. Still, she was much too shy to ask.
Then he asked her why she wanted to come to land. Looking up at him again, she pondered. "Well, I...I've only been on land once," she said quietly, thinking back to that time with Luca. "But I was just...I didn't want you to take that maid," she said, glancing over at the sleeping mermaid. She sure was a heavy sleeper. "So I...tried to be brave." |

TAGS Gabrielle, Galene WORDS 383 NOTES ~ Innocent confusion beamed from the Mermaid’s face at his reply to his actions. Fenryl could see it slowly comprehend in her mind, mulling over this new notion. True enough he didn’t know about these exercises prior to coming to land. It was just variations of swimming drills back in the militia, so it would make sense that she wouldn’t know of them…he guessed.
I always seem to encounter such feral Mermaids… he thought begrudgingly.
Nevertheless he smirked at her bewilderment, at least until she smartly asked why he didn’t swim then. The colour in his face drained and he swallowed, trying to keep his expression as stoic as possible.
“I…prefer being on land,” he mumbled in reply, eyes trained on the dirt.
His eyes closed, the blood-splattered memories filling his mind once more. His mouth a grim line he said no more, even though the curiosity of his acquaintance was nauseously obvious to him. Were Mermaids always so naïve, so trusting, so ignorant? He could hardly say, though it didn’t really put much stack into his confidence of his kind.
So with his full attention on the girl, cross-legged as the water lazily washed ashore to his boots, his eyes narrowed as he listened to her. Was it because she knew he was a Merman that she trusted him? But what about all the other malicious Merman in the world who may or may not be pirates? It was hardly comforting to know that Mermaids randomly hoped the land to be like underwater. In a way though, it did relieve him to hear that she wasn’t too acquainted with land and its infinite horrors and lies. That way, she could stay as naïve as she pleased without worrying for knowledge.
"But I was just...I didn't want you to take that maid. So I...tried to be brave.”
Fenryl’s eyebrows rose delicately in mild surprise, before settling into a gentle smile.
“You’re very kind,” he said softly, hands together and twiddling his thumbs. “Land is no place for most Merpeople, really…”
He trailed off as he became consumed with his thoughts, the ocean’s waves hypnotic upon the horizon. Until suddenly a small fact popped up in his mind, and he looked back to the Mermaid.
“What’s your name?” he asked politely, having already given his own.

It wasn't like she didn't believe she was kind but it was always nice to hear it from someone else. Since the maid seemed to be in quite a bit less danger, though, Galene felt a little better leaving her guard down. A more experienced merperson might still be wary of Fenryl or be prepared at any moment for a pirate attack, but Galene was still young and naive.
He said land was no place for a merperson, but yet he was on land. He said he preferred it. While Galene was still in awe about everything that was on solid ground, she would never pick it over the sea. She loved the water, swimming in it and being suspended, weightless in it. It was a comfortable place to live, even though it was becoming increasingly more and more dangerous as the times went on.
And then when he asked, she realized she had never responded with her own name. She gasped a little bit, realizing how rude that must've seemed, when he gave her his name but she hadn't given him hers. "I'm sorry, I didn't introduce myself earlier," she apologized, looking down at the ocean bed that she was relaxing on, the crystal clear water shimmering in the sunlight.
"My name is Galene." It was strange; she had met some merpeople that had surnames, but she didn't. Or she didn't think she did. Her parents had never told her of one and nobody in her tribe had said anything either. It didn't matter much, anyway. The ocean was so vast that identifying someone by their surname would be nearly impossible. |
