The soft, warm sand felt nicer against her tailfin than a rigid rock, so Galene took the chance and swam from her little alcove to the beach, body submersed underwater with just the top of her head and her eyes sticking above the surface, surveying the area warily. It wasn't that Galene was afraid of people, she was just horribly timid. Especially when it came to singing. She was a good singer, but she'd never admit that and she'd also never want anyone to hear her practice. When she performed, it was different...she was prepared and she knew there was such a low margin of messing up and being made fun of that it gave her the confidence to actually do it. But practicing had to be done alone. When she had ascertained that nobody was around, the mermaid swam closer to shore, sitting so her tail was mostly submerged in the ocean but the rest of her body was above water. Small fish and crabs scuttled around her fin but she paid them no mind as she sunned herself, enjoying the feeling of the warm summer sun on her shoulders. For a creature that spent so much time in the water she really did like the sunlight and reveled in it a bit before she started to warm up her voice, timidly at first but gaining more volume and robustness as she continued. As soon as she was sure her vocal cords had warmed up enough, she began to sing. It was a new song that she had learned a while ago but didn't have much time to practice. Every so often she'd mess up and start over, tripping over her words or producing an incorrect note. Practice made perfect, though. That's what her father had always told her. So she kept singing, working her hardest to achieve the correct notes and lilts and key while smoothly transitioning from word to word. It wasn't in English, of course, but rather in an ancient tongue of merpeople that hardly anyone understood anymore. The melodies were haunting and dark, like the depths of the sea where the merfolk had originated from. For a species that always seemed so...joyful, many of their songs mimicked the behavior of the ocean with the lilting melodies like waves and the minor keys, to signify the depth and mystery of it all. As she sang and practiced, Galene became more and more comfortable with her surroundings. Her eyes eventually slid shut as she immersed herself in the song, focusing on the music instead of the environment...no one was bound to hear her or find her, so she was completely at ease. |
