[cs=2][atrb=valign,top] social FAMILY PARENTS: no contact SIBLINGS: twelve, no contact OTHER FAMILY: no contact PETS: n/a WORK JOB: stray SOCIAL STATUS: urchin OTHER PROPOSAL ITEM: chocolate raspberry truffles physical STATISTICS HEIGHT: 4'6" WEIGHT: 85lbs APPEARANCE EYE COLOR: periwinkle HAIR COLOR: lavender MEDICAL INFORMATION • malka is selectively mute, finding that failing to communicate makes it easier to go unnoticed. she's entirely capable of speaking and even sometimes sings to pass the time, but conversation is rare. when she does start talking, though, it's probably something important; she doesn't like to waste her breath. • malka has reactive attachment disorder of the inhibited variety. since spending more time among and around other people it has gotten better to some degree and she's been able to create some semblance of an integrated life for herself. after having isolated herself for some time she is more willing to reach out to people, but she is still incredibly discriminate regarding who she interacts with and why. • she is incredibly sensitive to touch and loud noises. do not touch her. don't do it. • her aging has yet to slow to a stop, and as such, her magical qualities are not yet readily apparent. she's obviously aware of them, but keeping other people in the dark is no challenge. personality + clever + observant + calm + self-reliant + capable - manipulative - dismissive - inexpressive - reserved - naive BACKGROUND INFORMATION malka was born into a very large family of no significant wealth; her parents had far too many children to care for, and not nearly enough money or resources with which to do so. her upbringing was lacking, to say the least, and pathetically neglectful. her parents put in extra hours at work to support the chaotic home situation they had built, leaving the oldest of the siblings to stay home and care for the younger. a lack of capability, combined with their growing resentment towards those they cared for, left the children on the receiving end of their frustrations. it never escalated to abuse, but familial warmth was something she can't say she ever experienced. she didn't know what she was missing, and she still doesn't. when malka was seven years old, she was separated from her family. at the time, she was the seventh of her parents' ten children. unable to leave the younger children at home unsupervised, whenever one of the eldest needed to run an errand, the other nine ran in a pack behind them; they traveled in a group, or not at all. it was a relatively trivial chore that set everything in motion: one of the oldest children was making a job inquiry, out in the country where they could get away with hiring younger. the exchange hadn't taken very long, apparently. malka slipped away at some point to use a public bathroom, and by the time she came back out, the rest of them were nowhere to be found. it wasn't the first time this sort of thing had happened; she found a nearby bench, sat down, and waited for them to come back. she had a nagging feeling from the beginning, but still gave it a good five hours before she came to the conclusion that they probably weren't coming back for her. her bond with her parents and siblings wasn't a particularly strong one; from the time she was born she already had six siblings older than her who were starved for their parents' attention as it was, and the few that had come after her were so young and needy that she was a second thought even out of those who still needed caring for. being separated from them wasn't anything she was particularly upset about, but she didn't know how to be on her own. she gave it another short amount of time before she decided she would try to get home on her own. wandering got her nowhere. she went in circles a few times before just ending up lost worse than before. taking one last gamble, she sneaked a ride under some hay in somebody's wagon, hoping it would take her back at least into some familiar territory. she had a pretty good feeling about it, too. after the first several hours, she knew the ride wasn't going to get her home; nearly an entire day's travel later, however, it did get her somewhere. when the wagon finally skidded to a halt, she popped her head out to find that they had arrived at some sort of farm. she slipped out the back before she had a chance to be seen or yelled at or jabbed with a pitchfork, but didn't stray too far. her first few nights on sepalum peninsula were spent nervously sleeping in one of their empty stables. she wasn't sure what she was going to do with herself, but she knew she didn't inherently dislike it. it was a quiet freedom to being alone that she never had at home, and without having to share her spoils with nine other children, food was more readily available, too. hay didn't have a whole lot of nutritional value, and it wasn't tasty at all, but she wasn't going hungry like she had been. after a few days, of course, her family eventually noticed her absence. there was a search, but she was so far from home that news of her disappearance never reached those around her. she was on her own. she didn't stay hidden in those stables forever, obviously. an urgent need for nutrients was what finally lead her to go explore the rest of the peninsula. it was much more beautiful than her hometown, and there was more to do, more to see. as time went on she became more and more comfortable with her surroundings, freer. her lifestyle from then on was largely trial and error. if it weren't for her magic passively steering her away from trouble, she might not have made it through the first year or so, but she came through it in one piece. that isn't to say that it was easy: magical being or not, if you don't eat, you'll starve; if you don't find warmth in the winter, you'll freeze, and if you don't cool down in the summer, you'll die from the heat. most of what she learned to get by, she learned from sitting back and watching others. she had never questioned the importance of money, but only when she was on her own did she really understand it. combing the beach for shells and lost objects to sell off was enough to keep her fed and well; enough to indulge in a sweet now and again, or for a night in front of the fireplace at the inn when the winter got too cold. still, just staying alive wasn't enough to be comfortable. as she became more well known throughout the peninsula, luckily, people did begin to take pity on her. 'it takes a village to raise a child', as it goes. some of the shopkeepers that she was more familiar with would give her what they could, whether it be their day old breads, or a coat for the cold weather. the people who watched her struggling to feed herself taught her how to fish, and would allow her to run their errands for what money they could spare. five years now, she has been on her own. even now she continues to carry herself just as she has, and with the tricks she's picked up on her own over those five years, she's doing better than ever. it's hardly luxurious, but it's exactly as she wants it to be. PERSONALITY • malka may be more capable and independent than many people her age, but she's still a child. she's constantly seeking some kind of entertainment or stimulation that treasure hunting on the beach doesn't always satisfy. she gravitates towards people she thinks she'll be able to get along with; other children and magic users in particular. she won't approach a group or strike up a conversation, but she might quietly drop a flower crown on your head or help herself to assisting in the construction of your sand castle. • on the other hand, if she feels she doesn't have anything in common with someone and they have nothing to offer one another, she has few reservations when it comes to outright ignoring them or fleeing the situation. • malka is reserved, but not antisocial. while she's certainly more interactive than communicative, she spends much of her time observing others and knows how to get a point across to someone when she needs to, verbally or otherwise. • largely due to her own failure to communicate in a way that people can easily understand, she doesn't often find the chance to forge a legitimate friendship, but as she gets closer to a person, she has a playful streak that even tends towards mischief. extra • her primary form of magic is a passive one that takes the form of a sensitivity, like a finely tuned gut feeling alerting her to peoples' intentions and giving her good or bad feelings about any given situation, though she only rarely glimpses anything specific. she'll likely be able to pick up things like scrying, divination and projection quite easily later on, and also has the potential to learn how to better cast spells, though she isn't very good at the ones she knows now. • while malka is young she is far from incompetent and she manages quite well, all things considered. she makes a sweet sum of money doing mundane things, whether it be fishing, busking while she sings, or running odd errands for those who ask, but the real money lies elsewhere. malka sells off secrets; she's naturally observant, covers good ground, and has an ear for what's interesting. if you've got a question she can answer, a whisper in your ear will cost you, and if she can't, a bit more out of pocket and she might even be so kind as to go investigating. • to many peoples' concern, malka is entirely content with her present lifestyle. not only is she not looking for any sort of permanent home or employment, she will outright reject these things when they are offered to her. • malka has never been enrolled in a school and has no formal education. she can't read or write anything aside from her name and her grasp on mathematics is limited to single and double digit addition and subtraction. • malka is friends with every stray cat on the peninsula. every single one. she loves them all. ooc NAME: panzer, pz CHARACTERS: dorian maris HOW DID YOU FIND US: referred by hibiscus FACECLAIM: EL SHADDAI, nanna - malka spinel MADE BY HABBUE FOR THIS IS HOME |
