This was a bad idea. Why did he ever think this was a good idea? What unearthly demon possessed his mind to think that this was even an acceptable idea? Skylar had spent the entire morning practicing turning his tail into legs just so he could make the trip into town. He had gotten rather proud at his record 10 minute time. At first the transformation only lasted a couple seconds, but with enough determination he managed to get them to stay for a reasonable amount of time and got some practice using them. Even though Skylar could walk, he was still slow. Imagine spending your entire life on a boat and then walking on land, that’s how he felt. All of this effort was being put in place for a stupid cough. He had woken up that morning with something running down his nose. The water was too warm for his tastes that night so he ended up sleeping on the sandy beach. Everything was fine until he woke up the next morning with a dry throat and some sort of thick liquid coming out of his nose coupled with a cough. His first instinct in all foreign situations was to panic, but unfortunately Skylar had absolutely no idea what do with himself. After a few failed attempts at sniffling the substance in his nose away, Skylar was determined to get professional help to make sure he wasn’t dying. After gathering up the courage to ask a few citizens on the beach where the hospital was he successfully made it to the front door without too many mishaps. He had accidently noticed over a woman’s flower pot and stepped on the tail of a cat before pushing the front doors open with the full force of his body. The doors required less force than Skylar had anticipated which caused his entire body to crash onto the ground in full force. The door offered little resistance which also meant it did little to break his fall as he tumbled downwards in front of the entire hospital staff (which at that moment consisted of just one individual). To make matters even worse, he couldn’t get back up. When Skylar tried to pull his legs underneath him, he was hit with a numbing sensation. Looking down he could see that his legs were still there, but he was unable to move them. Oh no... It was only a matter of seconds now before they changed back to scales and he was stuck on the hospital floor. Calling for help was useless so all he could do was hide his face underneath the brown coat he was wearing and hope that he didn’t die from embarrassment. Peeking his eyes out from underneath his coat for only a second, he was greeted with the familiar sight of his black and white striped tail. He had been minding his own business, inputting some numbers into a spreadsheet, because apparently he had to play bookkeeper as well as receptionist. It was such a dull and boring task but at least it was something to do; it broke up the monotony of his usual schtick. Which always ended up being waiting for some website to load as he looked around the internet, which was as slow as ever. Thank god spreadsheets weren't online or doing the number crunching would take weeks. A loud bang on the door caused him to look up, seeing a strange looking...boy? man? — burst through the door as he fell to the floor. Jumping in shock, Josiah looked down at the strange person laying on the ground only to be completely flabbergasted as he witnessed a pair of legs morph together and turn into a long, black and white striped tail. A tail. "What the hell?" he muttered, getting out of his chair and going around the desk to assess the situation. Of course Aveline was gone when this happened, she had left to go get lunch or something along those lines (he barely listened) and now karma was biting him in the ass with all of this on his hands. He'd, of course, heard of the merpeople that had been coming to the peninsula but he'd never seen one. He wasn't a fan of the beach or the water so he mostly just stayed in the town...mostly at home. He really didn't have that grand of a life. Before he started to wallow and ponder, though, he turned his attention back to the situation at hand. While he wasn't one for doctorliness or caring, he couldn't leave this half-fish person on the ground for Aveline to deal with. Damn, what if he died right there? That would look bad on his quarterly performance review. Still, he didn't know what to do. Should he pick the thing up? Did the fish boy need water? Why was he even in a hospital, didn't merpeople have their own witch doctors or something? Honestly, he didn't know anything about the finned creatures. "What are you, uh...in here for?" he finally asked, obviously unclear as to what to do. "Do you need water? I don't want you flopping around and dying on the clean floor. I just mopped it this morning." Custodian. He had to be a custodian too. And apparently now, he had to play doctor. Damn, it was like a one man show. The Primula Hospital, starring Josiah Waters — who honestly really didn't want to be here right now.
