history
alaric rosencrantz says that he never knew who his parents were. his earliest memory is that of waking up with an elderly lady standing over him, smiling, and stroking his face. that lady, he says, is the one who raised him, and the one person he will attest to being a relative of his. the truth of the matter is that rosencrantz had a mother and a father, and they had owned a lovely ranch with a wide variety of vegetable patches. rosencrantz grew up as a content but oddly quiet child who tended to stay near his mother, clutching at her skirt with small hands and watching her cook. he wasn't naturally attuned to physical labour, it seemed, something his parents took in stride.
the rosencrantzes were a rather close-knit family, and every year, they took their produce to town to sell. young rosencrantz came along as well, quiet and reclusive but always watching, always observing. it was a lovely summer day, when, on the road to primula, the family was attacked by bandits. rosencrantz's mother and father were both killed, and the bandits escaped with whatever money and valuables they could find in the cart, except for a single necklace that rosencrantz's mother wore. rosencrantz was seven. an elderly lady found him, huddled near the body of his mother, tears streaming from blank, sightless eyes.
the lady was at a loss at to what to do. the child was obviously in shock, and he was clutching at a necklace like it was his lifeline, and he didn't seem to be seeing anything at all. he was utterly unresponsive. she decided that she couldn't possibly leave a small child all alone in such horrid conditions, and took him with her to primula town, where she lived in a little apartment above a jewelry shop. there, she washed him up, clothed him, fed him, and then tried asking him his name. the boy replied that he couldn't remember, didn't know who he was, and proceeded to ask why he was even there.
abruptly, the woman realized that the boy honestly and truly could not remember a thing about the traumatic event -- and apparently couldn't recall anything before even that. remembering the letters that had been painted onto the desecrated cart, she told him that his last name was "rosencrantz", and then, because she'd always wanted a son of her own, told him that his first name was "alaric". from that day on, rosencrantz lived with the elderly woman, and grew up in quite lovely circumstances. he was able to get an education, learn, study, and developed a special interest in the scholarly pursuits and mathematics.
rosencrantz was twenty-four when the lady died. someone had said it was heart disease. rosencrantz wasn't sure if he felt sad, but he did know that he felt quite hollow, and his eyes felt hot and maybe something leaked out from them. the lady left the shop to him, and rosencrantz maintains it quite diligently.
