twenty-two · male · clothes shop clerk · townspeople
personality
positive
negative
- easygoing; there's not much that bothers him
- open-minded; there's not much he rejects either
- sociable; he loves meeting people, talking to them, listening to them, just being around them
- confident; though he knows his limits, he doesn't doubt himself often
- optimistic; because everything will work out in the end, really!
negative
- unconcerned; life's too short for worrying!
- lazy; life's too short for working too!
- dependent; so as expected, his parents do the worrying and working for him
- irresponsible; meanwhile, if you ask him why he hasn't learned to cook yet, when he'll go back to school, what he'll do in the future, he'll just shrug, give you that lop-sided smile that means "Dunno, haven't thought of it"
- ignorant; of his own choosing, because it's easier to live with your eyes and ears closed
history
Born to a couple unprepared for a new family, Arden and his younger brother Aidan were adopted as infants by a Mr. and Mrs. Etheridge, a well-to-do city couple incapable of having their own children. For a good part of his life, Arden lived easily without much for want; his parents supplied him with all the money he could ever want, while his natural charisma and good looks supplied him with both friends and lovers. Most of all, he had Aidan who, though oftentimes grumpy and disagreeable, he thought was the bestest little brother ever. They were going to stick together forever, them and their parents and all of their friends, or so he believed until Aidan told him one day he was going to be abroad for college.
Then a freshman at a local university, Arden could only stare blankly at his brother. All the complicated things Aidan was saying, about wanting to get away from them all and be independent, flew right over his head. An entirely different country? That's really far! And all by himself too? Wasn't he going to be lonely? Before he could offer to transfer schools and go with him, Aidan cut him off, his tired eyes surprisingly cold as he said, "I just want to live my own life, Arden. Maybe you should too."
When Arden went back to college for his sophomore year, his life felt oddly different. Again and again his brother's words popped into his head. Live his own life? Be independent? Arden didn't quite understand how this didn't match current lifestyle, but Aidan always was the wiser of the two; maybe he should change his life up and get out in the world too. Traveling did seem pretty fun and everyone at his college were getting to be downers anyway, worrying all the time about careers and internships and the future and stuff like that. As if the future mattered more than the present they were wasting with all their worry.
So after finishing his sophomore year, Arden opted to take time off from school to go travel himself, settling on Sepalum as his destination because come on, it was this cute lil' nature-y town with all this history to it. That and it had a beach. A beach, right there! But what meant to be just a year off of relaxation stretched over a few more days, weeks, months until he had already lived in Sepalum for two years. His parents continued to send him money from afar, but along with them came letters that asked when he would be coming back, was he going to continue with college, what his plans were then and beyond. And to each of those questions, Arden was fine telling them, "I dunno, give me some time to think it over." Because worrying about their worry and returning home, where rigid schoolwork and career searches awaited him? It just wasn't his style.
