Zalea, named after the azalea flowers her mother loved so much, was born deep within the Quercus Woods. She was raised out of the sight of the town, as her mother was before her. Her mother would read to her every night before she went to bed but before long, she began to pick up on things from the books her mother read to her.
She asked her mother where her father was. She told her that he had gone off to war and never come back. Zalea was confused by this. Her mother liked reading her all kinds of books, including history. She asked what war and her mother told her the war between the God of Destruction and the Goddess. Her mother said that he left to fight the war and never came home.
Zalea was even more confused by then though. The war was so long ago, how could she be only 12(the age she was when her mother finally opened up). Her mother told her that she, Xaria, was actually a magical being. She had lived in the woods for a long time, staying away from others because it was said that a look from her could turn one to stone. The curse was from before even the great war. It was said that a female ancestor had angered an old god who cursed her with a sight that would turn any who looked into her eyes into stone.
Her mother had inherited the curse. So she lived in the woods. The only penance that the curse allowed was that the one soul mate of the cursed would not be turned to stone. So her father had stumbled upon their cottage and to her surprise, he didn't turn to stone. And before he went to war, he gave her a lock of hair for a magical spell. If she ever felt like she had no reason to live, she could use the hair to cast a spell to bring a daughter into existence. So eventually she was so depressed at her lovers passing that she gathered the ingredients and drank. She then gave birth to Zalea.
Xaria told Zalea that she too probably inherited the curse, so she should never go out into the town. To do so would endanger everyone. So Zalea listened to her mother, never straying too far from the cottage. She learned to farm the land from her mother and how to make clothes, something she took great interest in.
Then one day at 14, when she was outside humming to herself, a group of males appeared from the woods. Zalea, fearing turning them to stone, begged them to stay away from her but they came at her. Her mother came to her daughter's rescue and turned each to stone but she was fatally wounded in the process.
Zalea tried her best to care for her mother but Xaria told her that she wanted to rest and see her soul mate now. Zalea buried by the Azalea bushes she loved so much and has been tending the land deep within Quercus Woods ever since.
