history
It started with a girl in a bookstore.
Nicolas was in his junior year of college, younger than his peers because of the impressive study habits he culminated in his childhood with the help of his loving parent, Marianne Grey. He had never known his father – the limit of his knowledge was that it was a case of teenage pregnancy, and the bastard didn’t want anything to do with it – but this fact failed to dissuade and depress Nicolas. What mattered most to him was taking care of Mother, which he believed was through being a terrific, splendid student.
His personality has been mostly one-dimensional as a high-schooler – he had a very determined side, one that was focused and involved the pouring of his entire being into work, and it was this side that Nicolas nourished. However once college in the city settled in, he became more and more social, up to the point that he set aside a time for studying, working (part-time job at a coffeehouse) and helping Mother around the house.
But, I digress.
When he entered college, he was seventeen and all ready to mingle. Apparently, the shut-out testosterone in high school could claw its way to the surface. This is when he started to drift away from his Mother, but only slightly: she’s still the most important person in his life, but college life was just like being a kid on Christmas Eve. There were so many presents, yet so little time to unwrap them. Nicolas immersed himself in the varying cultures and personalities that he came across, and this eventually opened him up to dating. One of the things he discovered about himself while in tertiary education was that he liked girls. He liked girls a lot.
This leads us back to where we started: a girl at a bookstore. Nicolas was browsing through the titles in the book list a friend recommended to him when she caught his eye. A brunette in a simple pair of jeans and a white tank top who was obviously having trouble balancing her stack of materials was a bit hard to ignore. Naturally, Nicolas came to her aid, and they ended up talking. Long story short, four months after, they were dating.
Now, while Nicolas was the type of man who enjoyed control, Lorraine was the spontaneous sort, all plans thrown to the wind. It was one of the things that occasionally got on Nicolas’ nerves. Lorraine was constantly, passionately speaking about moving away from the city for a while, abroad and other places, but Nicolas never entertained that idea for too long. When she had to move because of personal problems, Nicolas took a step back and let her be. He enjoyed his privacy, so he thought she would be appreciating the gesture. (Apparently, not all people feel the same way; Lorraine broke things off soon after.) There were more incidents like it, but Nicolas had never been truly in love with someone, and though his heart had cracked here and there, it was yet to be broken.
Immediately after graduating from college, Nicolas was surprised at Marianne’s proposition to move to the country. Now, that wasn’t the really surprising part: Marianne wanted Nicolas to go without her.
Of course, Nicolas was vehemently against the idea. All for the reason that Marianne thought that he needed to get a life that’s just for him? Preposterous! Sure, they had relatives whom Marianne could live with, but…
His mother was pretty persistent, though. After a year and constant pestering (an attitude Nicolas hardly expected from Marianne), he decided to follow through with what she wanted. Upon arriving at Sepalum, a place that Lorraine used to rave about, Nicolas made it possible for him to be a rancher, mainly because he didn’t want to make long-lasting relationships since he didn’t plan on staying for too long, just to appease Marianne’s wishes.
It’s funny how life tended to make things the way you didn’t plan for them.
