samael slater
25 • male • inn cook • townsperson
personality
positive
negative
- independent. if he's capable of doing something, then he'll damn well do it himself—heck, even if he really can't do something, asking for help would be the absolute last resort, and only after giving a valiant attempt of his own.
- hardworking. after all, if he wants respect and a decent amount of money, he's got to earn it.
- lighthearted. even when things go wrong, more often than not samael will just brush it off with a smile. he doesn't see a point to dwelling on past mistakes, preferring to focus his energy on moving forward.
- calm. it's rare to see samael losing his cool. even his anger is usually more like tranquil fury than anything.
- organised. samael likes to keep spaces tidy and clutter-free; some might even call him a bit of a neat freak. he's very good at remembering where everything is, as long as people don't waltz in and mess it up for him.
negative
- tactless. samael is not exactly a master of social graces, and being unable to read body language definitely doesn't help. he tends to forget that speaking his mind is not the most polite thing to do in some situations.
- reckless. especially when he feels the need to prove himself. it's almost like he has no sense of self-preservation; that combined with his taste for adventure can lead to some sticky situations.
- stubborn. and when he does get himself into a mess, samael has a bad habit of not knowing when to back down. or rather, not being willing to back down, because once he decides on something, he will make sure to see it through, and good luck trying to convince him otherwise.
- proud. don't you dare pity him. he's had enough of being treated like an incompetent kid.
- perfectionist. unless he gives his absolute best, he might as well not be contributing at all. he always has something to criticise about his own creations, and finds it difficult to accept compliments.
history
samael's parents had no idea how to raise a blind child.
at least it wasn't the worst case scenario, they told themselves; he wasn't completely sightless, nor did he seem to have any other physical problems. but he still had worried parents hovering over him all throughout his childhood, wherever he went: holding his hand, making sure he didn't fall down the stairs or run into strangers or get hit by a car. when samael was four years old, the little family of three—his parents never had the second child they wanted—moved from the city to sepalum, in hopes that samael could grow up in a smaller, relatively safer environment.
samael's father kept his well-paying job in the city, but the inefficiency of commuting meant that he had to live separately from his wife and son, save for a few weeks of vacation every once in a while. samael's mother, meanwhile, took up a job at the inn and brought young samael with her everyday so she could keep an eye on him at work.
he reached his breaking point in his teens, when his parents were still coddling him, doing all they could to keep him from cooking, cleaning, or even going shopping by himself. since he clearly wasn't going to be learning anything at home, samael began sneaking out to get life experience on his own. of course, the most familiar place to him at the time was the inn, where a friendly cook agreed to take him under her wing and teach him the ropes of the kitchen. on other days, he would wander around familiarising himself with the town and outskirts (and occasionally getting lost, but he could always find a helping hand willing to guide him back).
when his mother found out about samael's escapades, an unpleasant row ensued, and samael finally made it clear that he hated his parents treating him like a child and acting as if he couldn't take care of himself. the evening ended with a door slamming into a shocked, tearful face, but the two managed to reconcile after a day of cooling down. by samael's request, his mother reluctantly left sepalum after a few months to join her husband back in the city, while samael, now an adult, landed himself a cooking position at the inn where he had practically grown up.
skills
- mining: level two
- fishing: level two
etc.
- samael was born with severe cortical visual impairment: his eyes are undamaged but the occipital cortex in his brain doesn't process visual information correctly. while he's legally blind and cannot distinguish details, he can still perceive colour, motion, and to some degree, ambient light.
- his sleeping schedule is... pretty much non-existent. he finds nothing wrong with pulling multiple all-nighters in a row and then collapsing for an entire day.
